2012 Toyota RAV4: Enhanced Features and Lasting Value

The Toyota RAV4, a pioneering vehicle in the crossover SUV segment that debuted 15 years prior, received valuable enhancements for the 2012 model year, primarily focusing on updated audio and connectivity features. The 2012 Toyota RAV4 models came standard with a newly designed audio system incorporating hands-free phone operation, phone book access, and wireless music streaming via Bluetooth® technology. For those seeking a more sophisticated experience, the Limited grade offered an optional display audio system equipped with navigation and Toyota Entune connectivity services, bringing modern multimedia functionality to this popular SUV.

Performance and Powertrain Options

Under the hood, the 2012 RAV4 offered two engine choices to cater to different driving needs and preferences. The standard engine was a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, producing 179 horsepower and 172 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine incorporated Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) for optimized performance and efficiency, along with twin balance shafts to minimize engine noise and vibration. The Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) further enhanced torque delivery across the RPM range.

This four-cylinder engine was paired with a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, delivering an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 22 MPG city and 28 MPG highway for front-wheel-drive models. Four-wheel-drive configurations achieved 21 MPG city and 27 MPG highway. The transmission included uphill/downhill shift control to reduce gear hunting on inclines and enhance engine braking during descents. A flex lock-up torque converter also contributed to improved fuel efficiency.

For drivers desiring more power, a 3.5-liter V6 engine was available, generating a robust 269 horsepower and 246 lb.-ft. of torque. Like the four-cylinder, the V6 also featured Dual VVT-i for optimized performance and reduced emissions. The V6 engine was exclusively mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, enabling the RAV4 to achieve zero-to-60 mph acceleration in under seven seconds. Despite its impressive power, the V6 RAV4 still offered respectable fuel economy, with EPA estimates of 19 MPG city and 27 MPG highway for front-wheel-drive models, and 19 MPG city and 26 MPG highway for four-wheel-drive models. All 2012 RAV4 models met Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV II) certification, reflecting Toyota’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

Ride, Handling, and Drivetrain

The 2012 Toyota RAV4 was engineered for a balance of agile handling and a comfortable ride, thanks to its rigid body structure, four-wheel independent suspension, and Electronic Power Steering (EPS). The EPS system contributed to fuel efficiency by eliminating the traditional power steering pump and providing assist only when needed. It also integrated with the Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system to enhance handling in challenging driving conditions.

The base RAV4 grade came equipped with P215/70 R16 tires on 16-inch steel wheels, with optional P225/65 R17 tires and styled steel or aluminum alloy wheels available. The Sport grade enhanced driving dynamics with standard 18-inch alloy wheels and a sport-tuned suspension. The Limited grade featured P215/65/R17 tires with six-spoke aluminum alloy wheels.

The available automatic on-demand four-wheel-drive system provided enhanced traction by electronically distributing torque between the front and rear wheels based on driving conditions and driver input. The system seamlessly transitioned between front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive for optimal fuel efficiency. In Auto mode, rear-wheel torque distribution was reduced during low-speed cornering for improved maneuverability. A 4WD manual locking switch maximized rear-wheel torque distribution at lower speeds, reverting to Auto mode above 25 mph or when the brakes were applied. Front-wheel-drive RAV4 models utilized a traction control-based automatic limited slip differential (Auto-LSD). Models equipped with the optional third-row seat included Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC) for improved control on steep inclines and descents.

Safety Features

Toyota prioritized safety in the 2012 RAV4, equipping it with a reinforced cabin featuring front and rear crumple zones and energy-absorbing materials. Active headrests in the front seats helped to minimize whiplash in rear-end collisions. Three-point seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters were standard in the front, with three-point seatbelts and height-adjustable headrests in all seating positions in the second and third rows.

Advanced front airbags, seat-mounted side airbags for the front seats, and roll-sensing side curtain airbags for the first and second rows were standard. The front passenger airbag system included an occupant classification sensor to optimize deployment based on passenger weight. Like all Toyota vehicles, the 2012 RAV4 included the STAR Safety System™, encompassing Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology (SST). The enhanced VSC system integrated with the EPS to provide more proactive and effective vehicle control.

Comfort, Convenience, and Trim Levels

The 2012 RAV4 offered a generous array of standard comfort and convenience features, including air conditioning, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio and hands-free phone controls, an AM/FM CD stereo with MP3/WMA playback, Bluetooth® wireless technology, USB port, auxiliary audio jack, cruise control, remote keyless entry, power windows and locks, and multiple power outlets and cupholders.

The Upgrade Value Package available on the base RAV4 added desirable features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rack, privacy glass, moonroof, and upgraded interior fabric. The Appearance Package for the Sport grade offered a unique rear door design without the spare tire, run-flat tires, heated mirrors with turn signals, and distinctive interior and exterior trim accents.

The Limited grade elevated the RAV4 experience with luxury features like dual-zone automatic climate control, Smart Key system with push-button start, upgraded seat fabric, leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift lever, and cargo area tonneau cover. Optional features across the range included a tow package for V6 models, moonroof, leather seats, heated front seats, power driver’s seat, and a backup monitor system with rearview camera.

Exterior and Interior Design

The 2012 RAV4 presented a blend of rugged and sporty styling, with sharp character lines, a distinctive grille and headlamp design, and LED tail lamps. The rear maintained a traditional SUV appearance with an externally mounted spare tire (excluding the Sport Appearance Package). The Sport grade was distinguished by 18-inch alloy wheels, color-keyed accents, fog lights, privacy glass, and sport-tuned suspension. The Limited grade featured unique chrome grille accents, roof rails, heated mirrors with turn signals, and multi-reflector halogen headlamps.

Inside, the RAV4 offered a contemporary design with brushed metallic silver accents and Optitron gauges. Practical touches included a large vanity mirror with illuminated lights, illuminated cupholders, and a cell phone holder. The Limited grade added further refinement with chrome accents. The RAV4 provided versatile seating configurations, ample cargo space with under-floor storage, and up to 73 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded. The 60/40-split second-row seats reclined, slid fore and aft, and folded flat. An optional 50/50 split-and-stow third-row seat was available on RAV4 and Limited grades. Numerous storage compartments throughout the cabin added to the vehicle’s practicality.

Warranty and Toyota Care

The 2012 Toyota RAV4 was backed by Toyota’s 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty, with a 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and corrosion coverage for 60 months with no mileage limitation. It also came standard with Toyota Care, a complimentary maintenance and roadside assistance plan for two years or 25,000 miles.
