From Lotus to GT86 Toyota: A Track Build Project

Switching gears from a Lotus Exige S2 NA, primarily used for track days near Paris at the Circuit des Ecuyers, I’m embarking on a new automotive adventure. My Lotus, enhanced with a Kaaz gearset and other performance upgrades, has been a formidable track weapon, clocking in at a mere 870kg with a full tank. You can explore the parts list and see its track performance in the provided links. However, the plan is now to sell the Exige to finance a Gt86 Toyota project.

The question is, why transition from a focused track machine like the Lotus to a GT86? The answer lies in practicality and versatility. The GT86 stands out as a lightweight car that uniquely offers significant cargo space. This cargo capacity is crucial for transporting a set of slick tires to the track – a necessity in a region like France, especially Paris, where rain is frequent. Navigating wet conditions on semi-slick tires on the road is simply too impractical.

To transform the GT86 into a capable track car, a comprehensive list of performance parts is planned: a Jackson Racing CARB supercharger for a substantial power boost, Penske Raceseng suspension or Nitron for optimized handling, a 4.55 final drive and OS Giken LSD for enhanced acceleration and cornering, Essex sprint BBK with Carbone Lorraine RC5+ brake pads for superior stopping power, and Michelin race slick tires (24/61 17) for ultimate track grip. For street use, Yokohama V105 tires will be paired with GramLight 57DR 17×9 wheels, while Wedssport TC105n 17×9 wheels are reserved for the track.

With these modifications, the aim is to create a GT86 that could potentially outpace the Lotus on track. This is an exciting prospect, especially considering the common perception of the GT86 as being underpowered. My extensive SimRacing background, particularly in LFS and iRacing, provides a solid foundation for driver skill and car setup knowledge. The goal now is to bring this virtual experience to reality with the GT86 build. For anyone in Europe interested in a track-ready Lotus Exige, mine is currently for sale.
