Direct Bolt-on Suspension Upgrade for the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

The original XREAS suspension system on this 2003 4Runner, with 280,000 miles, had completely failed. Research revealed that front suspension components from a 2nd or 3rd generation Tacoma are a direct fit for the 4th generation 4Runner.

This project utilized front struts (shocks and springs) from a 2019 Tacoma TRD Off-Road, providing factory Toyota Bilstein shocks. Rear shocks were also sourced from a 2017 Tacoma TRD Off-Road, again with Toyota Bilstein shocks. New rear springs for a 2007 FJ Cruiser were purchased from RockAuto. The total cost for used Tacoma parts and new FJ Cruiser springs was approximately $450. Note: If your 4Runner has the rear air ride height leveling system, you’ll need a conversion kit, like the one from MetalTech 4×4, to eliminate the air bags. This particular 4Runner did not have that system.
