Toyota TRD Camry 2022: NASCAR’s Next Gen Contender

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (May 5, 2021) – After more than two years of anticipation, Toyota and TRD (Toyota Racing Development) have officially revealed their Next Gen car for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series (NCS): the Toyota TRD Camry 2022. This unveiling marks a significant step forward in NASCAR as they introduce the Next Gen platform, and Toyota is ready to compete with the all-new TRD Camry.

Toyota has been a key collaborator in the development of the Next Gen vehicles, working closely with NASCAR and other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). The Next Gen race car program represents a revolutionary shift for the sport, aiming to enhance driver safety and foster even closer on-track competition. For Toyota, this was an opportunity to further connect their racing efforts with their production vehicles, most notably with the Toyota Camry Trd 2022.

A collaborative effort between Toyota, TRD (Toyota Racing Development, U.S.A.), and Calty Design ensured that the Toyota TRD Camry Next Gen embodies the styling and spirit of its production counterpart. From the aggressive front grill to the rear spoiler, the 2022 TRD Camry race car boasts unprecedented visual similarities to the consumer model. This dedication to production-car styling is a principle Toyota and TRD have championed since the introduction of the Camry in the NCS back in 2013. This close alignment makes the Toyota Camry TRD 2022 a true representation of track-inspired performance.

“The unveiling of the Toyota TRD Camry Next Gen car is the culmination of tremendous effort from all our partners, especially the dedicated teams at TRD and Calty Design,” stated Paul Doleshal, group manager of motorsports and assets, TMNA (Toyota Motor North America). “We are incredibly excited to introduce the TRD Camry as Toyota’s representative in the NASCAR Cup Series with this Next Gen project. The production TRD Camry epitomizes our commitment to performance, drawing inspiration directly from the track, making it the perfect model to take on this racing challenge.”

Toyota stands alone as the only manufacturer currently fielding three distinct nameplates across NASCAR’s national series. These include the TRD Camry in the NCS, the Supra in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS), and the Tundra in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS). Since entering the NCS and NXS in 2007, Camry race cars have achieved an impressive record of 155 NCS victories and secured three NCS championships. They have also claimed 171 NXS wins and two NXS championships, demonstrating Toyota’s consistent performance across NASCAR’s top tiers. The Tundra has further solidified Toyota’s racing legacy in the NCWTS since 2004, amassing 204 wins and eight Truck Series championships.

“Toyota and TRD are driven by a philosophy of continuous improvement, and we believe the Next Gen TRD Camry perfectly embodies this principle,” commented David Wilson, president of TRD. “While the Next Gen car platform introduces tighter performance parameters and reduced adjustability, we are confident that our race team partners and the entire TRD team are eager to embrace the challenge. We are all focused on learning the intricacies of this new car and unlocking performance advantages that will propel the TRD Camry to victory lane.”

The highly anticipated debut of the Toyota TRD Camry Next Gen is set for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season opener at the iconic Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, February 20, 2022. Fans and competitors alike are eager to witness the next chapter of NASCAR racing, with the Toyota Camry TRD 2022 leading the charge for Toyota’s continued success on the track.
