Toyota’s commitment to the United Kingdom began in 1989, marking a significant step in its global expansion. This year saw the foundation of Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd (TMUK) in December, signaling Toyota’s long-term vision for European automotive production. With a substantial investment of £2.75 billion, Toyota Uk has established itself as a cornerstone of British manufacturing, employing approximately 3,000 individuals across its two major sites. These sites include the vehicle manufacturing plant at Burnaston, Derbyshire, and the engine manufacturing plant in Deeside, North Wales, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to automotive production within the UK.
Production at the Burnaston plant commenced on December 16, 1992, with the Carina E being the first model to roll off the production line. This marked the beginning of a successful era, followed by the introduction of the Avensis in 1997. The Toyota Avensis became a mainstay of UK production for over two decades, witnessing three model generations and achieving a total production volume of 1,936,572 units before its final production in July 2018. The Burnaston plant’s history is rich with iconic models, further highlighting Toyota UK’s manufacturing capabilities.
Expanding its model range in the UK, Toyota introduced the Corolla to Burnaston in 1998. This paved the way for the new generation Corolla in 2001, showcasing Toyota’s ability to adapt and innovate within the UK market. In 2007, the Auris, a modern hatchback, took over production from the Corolla, reflecting changing market demands and Toyota’s forward-thinking approach. Toyota UK further solidified its position as a leader in automotive technology with the production of the Auris Hybrid in 2010. This was a landmark moment as it represented the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle in Europe, manufactured at Burnaston. The Auris Touring Sports followed in 2013, expanding the hybrid offering and demonstrating Toyota’s commitment to sustainable mobility in the UK.
The Burnaston plant entered a new chapter in January 2019 with the introduction of the latest generation Corolla. This model, including the Touring Sports variant, embodies Toyota’s dual hybrid strategy and represents the future of TMUK. Replacing the Auris, the new Corolla signifies Toyota’s ongoing investment and adaptation within the UK automotive landscape, focusing on hybrid technology as a core element of its manufacturing strategy. The processes undertaken at the Burnaston facility are extensive, encompassing stamping, welding, painting, plastic molding, and final assembly, showcasing a full spectrum of vehicle manufacturing expertise. Meanwhile, the Deeside plant specializes in machining, engine assembly, and aluminum casting, providing critical engine components for Toyota’s European operations. Toyota UK continues to be a vital part of Toyota’s global manufacturing network, contributing significantly to both the UK economy and the advancement of automotive technology.
