Toyota TRD Surf Concept: Riding the Wave of Nostalgia into the Future

Toyota has once again captured the adventurous spirit of the open road and beachside vibes with the unveiling of the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept. Debuting at the 2024 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, this concept car is a vibrant homage to Southern California’s iconic surf culture and the heritage of the original Toyota 4Runner. Built by the skilled team at the Toyota Motorsports Garage, the TRD Surf Concept seamlessly blends the nostalgic charm of the first-generation 4Runner with the advanced engineering and design of the all-new 2025 model, creating a unique vehicle that resonates with both the past and the future of Toyota Trd innovation.

The inspiration for the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is deeply rooted in the 1980s, a time when the Toyota 4Runner became synonymous with the Southern California beach scene. Surfers, in pursuit of the perfect wave, embraced the 4Runner for its ruggedness and versatility. Marty Schwerter, the lead builder and Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center, drew upon his personal memories of cruising the Pacific Coast Highway in a Toyota mini pickup to shape the vision for this concept. He recognized the spirit of the first-generation 4Runner in the 2025 model and sought to create a vehicle that embodies the essence of those carefree, sun-drenched days.

“The 2025 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged look and powerhouse 4cyl engine. I knew it had the potential to be the ultimate beach cruiser,” Schwerter explained. “We wanted to create something that would resonate today while paying homage to the past. The removable top was a must, just like the original, and we made sure it’s as functional as it is stylish.” This commitment to functionality and style is a hallmark of Toyota TRD design philosophy.

Starting with a brand-new 2025 4Runner TRD Limited, the team embarked on a transformative journey to create the ultimate beach-ready machine. The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept retains the impressive performance of the stock model, powered by the iForce 2.4L turbocharged engine that delivers 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. This power is channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission and a full-time four-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled dual-range transfer case. A custom exhaust system enhances the engine’s sound, adding to the overall driving experience that Toyota TRD is known for delivering.

However, transforming a capable 4Runner into the “perfect beach boss” presented significant engineering challenges. Creating a removable top while maintaining structural integrity and ensuring seamless aesthetics with and without the top required meticulous planning and execution.

“Engineering a legitimate, removable top; going from a 4-door to a 2-door while maintaining functional windows; flipping the front passenger seat for improved rear seat access; and adding 2-inches of width to both sides were all just tip of the iceberg issues,” Schwerter detailed. He emphasized that the success of the build lies in the harmonious integration of these modifications, resulting in a vehicle that is truly greater than the sum of its parts. This holistic approach to vehicle modification is a key aspect of Toyota TRD engineering.

The removable top was a central focus of the transformation. To ensure a flawless execution, the team conducted a practice run on a GEN5 4Runner to gain practical insights. The final removable top was fabricated in-house, combining traditional techniques with advanced CAD and 3D printing technologies to create precise cutlines that perfectly mirror the body lines. Designed for easy removal by a single person, the top provides the open-air freedom that is a defining characteristic of the original 4Runner and a desirable feature for any beach cruiser, embodying the adventurous spirit of Toyota TRD.

Complementing its rugged style, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept boasts a long-travel suspension system featuring billet aluminum front upper and lower A-arms. This advanced suspension is engineered to conquer challenging terrains while delivering a comfortable ride, a balance that Toyota TRD strives for in all its performance upgrades. Steering enhancements, custom front axles, and a Toyota Tundra rear-end housing further enhance its off-road prowess. The concept rides on 37-inch tires mounted to 17×8.5-inch custom wheels, completing its muscular and commanding stance, a signature of Toyota TRD vehicles.

The interior of the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is designed to be as practical as it is stylish for surf adventures. Weatherproofed with soft, waterproof flooring, it’s ready for wet gear and sandy feet. The front passenger seat flips forward to provide easy access to the rear seating area, enhancing functionality for passengers and gear. A custom surfboard “Travel Quiver,” designed specifically for this concept and perfectly paired with the roof rack, highlights the vehicle’s surf-centric theme and exemplifies the thoughtful accessory integration often seen in Toyota TRD models.

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is also a testament to the collaborative spirit within Toyota, bringing together teams from TRD North Carolina, TMNA Production Engineering, Service Parts and Accessory Development (SPAD), AAP, and Motorsports and Engagement Marketing. This cross-departmental effort underscores Toyota’s commitment to innovation and pushing boundaries, values that are central to the Toyota TRD brand.

“This vehicle not only showcases Toyota’s engineering prowess; it also reflects the passion and creativity of our team members who are dedicated to pushing the boundaries. And besides, who doesn’t love a concept dedicated to surfing!?” remarked Mike Tripp, group vice president, Toyota Marketing. The Toyota TRD Surf Concept stands as a vibrant example of how Toyota continues to celebrate its rich heritage while boldly innovating for the future of automotive adventure, especially within the Toyota TRD lineup. Visitors to the 2024 SEMA Show are invited to experience the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept firsthand at the Toyota booth (Central Hall, Booth 22200) from November 5-8, and to explore the exciting world of Toyota TRD.
