Toyota Sequoia Production Electrifies San Antonio with All-Hybrid Power

SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 21, 2022) – The Toyota Motor Manufacturing plant in Texas (Toyota Texas) is celebrating a significant milestone: the commencement of production for the all-new, all-hybrid Toyota Sequoia. This next-generation SUV embodies electrification, delivering both passion and robust power.

Born and built in Texas by a dedicated local workforce, the 2023 Toyota Sequoia marks a bold step into hybridization. It features the innovative twin-turbo V6 hybrid i-FORCE Max powertrain. This advanced system not only generates exceptional horsepower and torque, ensuring powerful performance, but also prioritizes fuel efficiency and reduces environmental impact by minimizing carbon emissions.

“This third-generation Toyota Sequoia represents a new era for electrified vehicles, moving us closer to achieving carbon neutrality,” stated Kevin Voelkel, president of Toyota Texas. “At the same time, it meets and exceeds the high expectations our customers have for this iconic SUV. Our team members are incredibly proud to add the Sequoia to our Texas-built production line. We embrace the challenge of delivering vehicles that resonate with our customers and enhance their lifestyles.”

Toyota Sequoia Finds Its New Home in Texas

Toyota’s commitment to Texas was reinforced in 2019 with a substantial $391 million investment in the San Antonio plant. This strategic investment specifically prepared the facility to become the exclusive manufacturing hub for both the all-new Toyota Tundra and the Toyota Sequoia. The launch of the Sequoia marks a new chapter in advanced manufacturing at Toyota Texas. Over 3,800 Toyota employees and 5,300 on-site suppliers dedicated countless hours to prepare for the Sequoia’s debut. Their efforts included integrating cutting-edge manufacturing technologies, such as advanced laser welding, and refining production processes to handle the largest single sheet of metal ever used in Toyota’s vehicle production history.

The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is engineered to uphold its powerful and legendary reputation. It boasts a striking new design, offers luxurious levels of comfort, and integrates impressive technology. This full-size SUV perfectly balances robust performance with enhanced efficiency. Coupled with Toyota’s renowned legacy of quality, durability, and reliability, the three-row Toyota Sequoia is poised to become a leader in the competitive large-size SUV segment when it arrives at dealerships next month. Notably, the Sequoia will debut with the Capstone grade, an exclusive suite of premium features reserved for vehicles manufactured at Toyota Texas, further emphasizing the plant’s significance.

Strengthening Roots in San Antonio

To celebrate the Toyota Sequoia finding its new production home, Toyota Texas has demonstrated its commitment to the local San Antonio community by donating a total of $100,000 to two vital organizations: the San Antonio River Foundation and the San Antonio Parks Foundation. These donations are specifically designated to support initiatives focused on expanding and preserving the city’s tree canopy and promoting environmental stewardship throughout San Antonio’s south side.

Toyota’s total investment in its San Antonio operations now exceeds $3.1 billion, underscoring its long-term commitment to the region.

“We are truly thrilled that the new Toyota Sequoia is being manufactured right here in San Antonio at Toyota’s upgraded facility. This milestone further demonstrates Toyota’s strong confidence in our city and our talented workforce,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg, acknowledging the positive impact of Toyota’s continued investment.

Judge Wolff further emphasized the long-standing partnership, stating, “I had the privilege of working with Toyota when they chose San Antonio in 2002. For nearly two decades, they have been an exemplary corporate leader. Together with their crucial supply partners, they have created over 7,000 jobs for Bexar County residents. We are delighted to celebrate the local production of the all-new, all-hybrid Toyota Sequoia.”
