Up to 44-Mile All-Electric Range and 52 MPG Combined Hybrid Efficiency
Powerful Hybrid System Delivering 220 hp and 0-60 mph in 6.6 Seconds
Featuring Toyota Audio Multimedia with Optional 12.3-inch Touchscreen and JBL® Audio
PLANO, Texas (Sept. 26, 2024) – Since its debut in 2016 as the Prius Prime, Toyota’s plug-in hybrid model has offered drivers the ultimate flexibility – electric power for daily commutes and hybrid efficiency for extended journeys. The introduction of the new Prius Prime in 2022 elevated this concept further, boasting an impressive 44-mile manufacturer-estimated EV range and a brisk 6.6-second 0-60 mph acceleration. This powertrain configuration quickly became a popular choice, enabling drivers to navigate daily routines on electric power while retaining the freedom for long-distance travel.
For the 2025 model year, this winning formula of electric capability and hybrid performance continues, but with a clear and concise name change: Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid. This updated name is designed to simplify powertrain identification within the Prius lineup, making it easier for consumers to distinguish the plug-in hybrid option. The 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid will also feature a “PHEV” badge on the rear, further emphasizing its Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle powertrain. It will be available in three distinct grades: SE, XSE, and XSE Premium, catering to a range of preferences and needs.
Equipped with a 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, the SE grade achieves a manufacturer-estimated all-electric driving range of 44 miles. The XSE and XSE Premium grades offer a still impressive manufacturer-estimated all-electric driving range of 40 miles. When longer distances are required, the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid seamlessly transitions to its advanced fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System. This system combines a highly efficient 2.0-liter engine with electric motor generators, delivering an exceptional driving experience with a manufacturer-estimated combined fuel economy of up to 52 MPG. Furthermore, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid packs a punch with 220 net-combined hybrid system horsepower and 139 lb.-ft. of torque, ensuring responsive performance.
Unlocking Electric Power for Your Drive
Both the standard Prius Hybrid and the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid share Toyota’s renowned Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain, seamlessly integrating the power of a gasoline engine and electric motors. The key distinction lies in the Plug-in Hybrid model’s ability to be externally charged, replenishing its lithium-ion battery pack. Home charging is straightforward, requiring no specialized equipment. Simply connect the Prius Plug-in Hybrid to a standard household outlet using the provided cable (Toyota recommends a dedicated GFI 15A outlet). A full recharge takes approximately eleven hours on a standard 120V home outlet and around four hours using a Level 2 charger under ideal conditions. Even without plugging in, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid maintains its efficiency, operating as a highly capable hybrid vehicle.
The Prius PHEV offers versatile driving modes to optimize efficiency and performance based on driver preferences and battery charge levels. EV Mode prioritizes electric power, functioning purely as a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) when sufficient charge is available. Auto EV/HV Mode primarily utilizes the battery but intelligently switches to HV mode for added power demands, such as steep inclines or higher speeds. In Hybrid Mode, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid automatically manages the balance between the gasoline engine and electric motors to maximize efficiency.
Further enhancing efficiency, the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid incorporates Predictive Efficient Drive with Predictive Deceleration Support. This system learns driver stopping patterns on frequently traveled routes and provides prompts to optimize deceleration, boosting fuel economy. As drivers approach familiar locations, the system signals when to release the accelerator and can apply assisted deceleration.

Performance and Efficiency in Harmony
At the heart of the 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid lies Toyota’s Fifth generation Toyota Hybrid System. This system pairs the M20A-FXS 2.0L inline four-cylinder gasoline engine with two motor-generators (MG1 and MG2) through a continuously variable transmission. The engine and electric motor (MG2) work together to deliver responsive performance, while both electric motors (MG1 and MG2) contribute to charging the lithium-ion battery, maximizing energy efficiency.
The transaxle/motor features a compact, high-output/low-loss design with a six-magnet and electromagnetic steel plate configuration to support driving functions effectively. For enhanced hybrid mode performance, both engine and battery power are utilized during acceleration, resulting in an engaging driving experience with 220 net combined hybrid system horsepower and 139 lb.-ft. of torque.
The Electronically Controlled Brake (ECB) system further contributes to the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid’s fuel efficiency. This system intelligently coordinates regenerative braking from the electric motors with the hydraulic braking system to achieve optimal stopping power. By actively recovering electrical energy during braking, this system maximizes fuel economy.
Standard Brake Hold adds convenience, reducing driver effort in stop-and-go traffic or at traffic lights. Releasing the accelerator pedal instantly disengages Brake Hold.
All Prius PHEV grades offer selectable Drive Modes:
- NORMAL: Balances fuel economy and vehicle acceleration for everyday driving.
- ECO: Prioritizes fuel efficiency by moderating power output in response to accelerator input.
- SPORT: Enhances dynamic performance and acceleration for a more engaging driving experience.
