SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (August 1, 2023) – The legend is back. After a three-year absence, Toyota’s longest-running nameplate, often recognized globally as the Toyota Patrol, makes a triumphant return to the North American market for the 2024 model year, reconnecting with its robust off-road roots. Since its US debut in 1958, the Land Cruiser, known to many as the Toyota Patrol in other regions, has evolved significantly. From the iconic two-door 40 Series, famed for its fold-down windshield, white roof, and rear jump seats, to the sophisticated and capable 200 Series, the last generation sold stateside which blended Land Cruiser’s legendary toughness with premium amenities. Now, the Land Cruiser, or Toyota Patrol as it’s known in some markets, honors its heritage, returning as a high-caliber off-roader at a more accessible price, ready to take a broader spectrum of adventurers on journeys across the world.
Constructed on the TNGA-F global truck platform, the new Land Cruiser, a vehicle with a global reputation akin to the Toyota Patrol, is engineered, designed, and rigorously tested to endure the most challenging environments. This generation of the Land Cruiser, or Toyota Patrol, will exclusively feature the high-performance i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, delivering 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Slightly more compact and narrower than the previous 200 Series, this new model offers enhanced agility on trails and incorporates off-road technology first introduced on the latest Toyota truck models. Limited to 5,000 units during its initial two months of production, the Land Cruiser will debut with a First Edition grade, boasting new two-tone paint options and enhanced off-road features.
“This icon, often celebrated as the Toyota Patrol in many parts of the world, rightfully belongs in our lineup,” stated Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager. “For 2024, the Land Cruiser, echoing the spirit of the Toyota Patrol, returns to its origins with a design inspired by its heritage, combined with the renowned capability and durability synonymous with the Land Cruiser name. It’s poised to embark on adventures with even more customers around the globe, continuing a legacy that spans generations.”
The 2024 Land Cruiser, a vehicle admired worldwide and sometimes referred to as the Toyota Patrol, will be manufactured at Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara and Hino plants in Japan and is slated to arrive in the U.S. in the spring of 2024. Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Pricing is anticipated to start in the mid-$50,000 range, with final pricing details to be announced closer to the on-sale date.
Returning to its Roots
For decades, the Land Cruiser, a vehicle often compared to and sometimes known as the Toyota Patrol in various markets, has been celebrated for its unparalleled capability, embodying Toyota’s core values of quality, durability, and reliability. When the Land Cruiser first entered the U.S. market in the late 1950s, initial sales were modest. However, with the introduction of the 40 Series, the Land Cruiser, or Toyota Patrol, quickly became Toyota’s best-selling model in the U.S. for five consecutive years. These early models were characterized by solid front and rear axles with leaf springs, and their distinctive boxy silhouette, flat roof, short overhangs, and “TOYOTA” grille became instantly recognizable. Over time, customer demands evolved, leading the Land Cruiser, much like the Toyota Patrol in its respective markets, to grow into larger station wagon formats, such as the 55 and 60 Series. This progression ultimately culminated in the 200 Series, a premium, full-size luxury off-road SUV that marked the Land Cruiser’s, or Toyota Patrol’s, previous presence in the U.S. market.
Now, after a three-year hiatus from the U.S. market, the Land Cruiser, a vehicle with a global legacy as both Land Cruiser and Toyota Patrol, is reborn, utilizing the global TNGA-F body-on-frame platform. This advanced ladder frame enhances chassis rigidity compared to the 200 Series, thanks to the strategic use of high-strength steel combined with blanking and laser welding techniques. In comparison to the outgoing 200 Series, the new Land Cruiser, or Toyota Patrol equivalent, is 4.4 inches narrower and 1.2 inches shorter, enhancing its off-road maneuverability.
Toyota’s North American-based studio, CALTY Design Research, collaborated closely with the global development team to shape the design direction of the new Land Cruiser, a vehicle with design philosophies shared with the Toyota Patrol. The design team focused on four core principles: authenticity, reliability, timelessness, and professionalism. The all-new Land Cruiser, echoing design cues from the Toyota Patrol, is a pure expression of form following function.
For that signature Land Cruiser aesthetic, the 1958 grade features iconic round LED headlights and a heritage “TOYOTA” grille, reminiscent of classic Toyota Patrol models. Land Cruiser grades upgrade to sleek, rectangular headlights, evoking the style of the FJ62. The squared body profile echoes Land Cruisers of the past, and the A-pillar is set back to enhance both the vehicle’s appearance and outward visibility on trails. The front overhang is also reduced to improve approach angles.
A newly engineered double-wishbone front suspension with twin-tube shocks is paired with a multi-link rear suspension with coil springs. To enhance steering feel and accommodate advanced safety and convenience systems, the Land Cruiser, similar to modern Toyota Patrol models, will feature electric power steering. All models are equipped with 17-inch disc brakes on both front and rear wheels. With a standard trailer hitch across all grades, the Land Cruiser, much like the capable Toyota Patrol, boasts a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds.
Standard i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Powertrain
The Land Cruiser’s innovative i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, a feature that sets it apart from some versions of the Toyota Patrol in other markets, comes standard across all grades. This system combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-hp electric motor integrated into an eight-speed transmission. Power is drawn from a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, resulting in a total system output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel economy estimates will be released closer to the Land Cruiser’s on-sale date.
Every Land Cruiser, mirroring the robust 4×4 capabilities of the Toyota Patrol, is equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive system featuring a center locking differential and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range. The system also incorporates Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and an Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD). An electronic locking rear differential is standard on all Land Cruisers, enhancing traction by enabling a 50/50 power split to the rear wheels, crucial for challenging terrains.
An Enduring Off-Road Icon
The Land Cruiser, much like the esteemed Toyota Patrol, has long been recognized as an off-road icon, and this new generation reinforces its legendary status. An all-new front stabilizer bar disconnect system is standard on Land Cruiser and First Edition grades, enhancing wheel articulation at the push of a button. Overall, the Land Cruiser boasts an approach angle of up to 31.0 degrees, a maximum departure angle of 22.0 degrees, and a breakover angle of 25.0 degrees. Ground clearance reaches up to 8.7 inches. For enhanced off-road protection, Land Cruiser owners can opt for rock rails and full-coverage high-strength steel skid plates. For recovery situations, front tow/recovery hooks are standard. The Land Cruiser 1958 grade comes standard with fog lamps to improve visibility, while the Land Cruiser grade features upgraded color-selectable RIGID fog lamps.
Multi-Terrain Select, now operational in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low, is standard on the Land Cruiser grade and offers adaptable settings to manage wheel spin across various terrains such as Mud, Dirt, and Sand. CRAWL Control, also standard, functions as a low-speed, off-road cruise control, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering while the system maintains a selected speed from five options. Downhill Assist Control is another standard off-road feature, aiding drivers in navigating steep descents by controlling vehicle speed. Drivers can monitor potential trail obstacles using the Multi-Terrain Monitor, displayed on the available 12.3-inch touchscreen, which is standard on the Land Cruiser grade.
With Toyota Genuine Accessories and Associated Accessory Products (AAP), the Land Cruiser, similar to the customizable Toyota Patrol, offers extensive personalization options. The AAP ecosystem is continually expanding and currently includes over 100 accessories, from off-road recovery gear to rack attachment brackets and outdoor sporting equipment carriers. These accessories can be conveniently financed along with the vehicle, making customization through Toyota easier than ever.
A Connected Cruiser
With seating for up to five, Land Cruiser 1958 models feature black fabric seats and an 8.0-inch touchscreen equipped with Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This advanced multimedia system provides access to a suite of enhanced connectivity and convenience features, including Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. The Land Cruiser grade upgrades to heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats, available in black or Java, and includes a 12.3-inch multimedia monitor and an optional 14-speaker JBL premium sound system. The Land Cruiser grade also offers optional 4G connectivity for up to five devices, transforming the vehicle into an AT&T Hotspot. A premium package further enhances the Land Cruiser Grade with leather-trimmed seats. The limited First Edition grade exclusively features leather-trimmed seats with a distinctive “First Edition” logo embossed on the door panels. A standard Qi wireless charging pad offers enhanced power output, and dual USB-C charging ports are provided in the front row, with rear passenger ports available. Practical features for off-road driving include a palm rest for touchscreen operation and side knee pads.
A Smart Key System with push-button start is standard across all grades. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, an available Digital Key enables vehicle entry, tailgate access, and vehicle starting via compatible smartphones (4G network dependent). The Digital Key can also be remotely shared, providing greater control over vehicle access.
Simplified Grade Structure
The Land Cruiser will be offered in three grades: Land Cruiser 1958, Land Cruiser, and the limited-run Land Cruiser First Edition. An available premium package adds power-adjustable heated and ventilated leather-trimmed seats with lumbar support, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, head-up display, digital rearview mirror, moonroof, and more.
The 2024 Land Cruiser will feature seven exterior color options: Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Underground, Black, Meteor Shower, Trail Dust, and Heritage Blue. The two-tone Trail Dust and Heritage Blue exterior colors are complemented by a Grayscape roof.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 Standard
All 2024 Land Cruiser models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0), Toyota’s comprehensive suite of active safety and convenience systems. Enhanced TSS capabilities are achieved through improved system sensors with superior detection performance. This suite includes:
- Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
- Lane Tracing Assist
- Road Sign Assist
- Automatic High Beams
- Proactive Driving Assist
Proactive Driving Assist, when conditions are met, utilizes the vehicle’s camera and radar to provide gentle braking into curves or gentle braking and/or steering to support driving tasks such as maintaining distance from preceding vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists. Proactive Driving Assist is not a substitute for the Pre-Collision System and operates under different parameters.
The Toyota Safety Sense features have been significantly enhanced for TSS 3.0:
- The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection now features enhanced detection capabilities due to new system sensors, including improved intersection support and enhanced detection of motorcyclists in addition to pedestrians and cyclists.
- Lane Departure Alert now includes Steering Assist and improved lane recognition, capable of detecting certain 3D objects like guardrails to better define lane boundaries.
- Dynamic Radar Cruise Control now offers Full-Speed Range capability and adds a fourth following distance setting. Enhanced vehicle detection allows the system to detect multiple preceding vehicles and vehicles in adjacent lanes, providing smoother and more natural speed adjustments, especially during lane changes.
- Lane Tracing Assist, a new feature for the Land Cruiser, requires Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to be enabled. It utilizes detectable lane markings and features enhanced lane recognition similar to Lane Departure Alert. In addition to lane centering, this system also helps create more space from vehicles being passed in adjacent lanes by slightly adjusting the vehicle’s path within its lane.
- Emergency Driving Stop System, a new function within Lane Tracing Assist, monitors driver inputs like steering to detect inattentiveness or unresponsiveness, such as during a medical emergency. If the driver fails to respond to alerts, the system is designed to bring the vehicle to a stop.
- Road Sign Assist, also new to the Land Cruiser, detects speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs, and certain warning signs, displaying an icon of the detected sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).
In addition to TSS 3.0, standard safety features include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) to alert drivers of vehicles in adjacent lanes and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) for enhanced awareness of approaching vehicles while reversing. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) is also standard.
Beyond Zero Vision
Reflecting Toyota’s commitment to a carbon-neutral future through a diverse approach, the Land Cruiser is the latest hybrid model in Toyota’s lineup to bear the Beyond Zero badge. Toyota currently offers 16 electrified vehicles, including twelve hybrid models, two plug-in hybrid models, the bZ4X battery electric vehicle, and the zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell Mirai, providing customers with more choices to reduce their carbon footprint than any other automaker.
