The legendary Toyota Hilux pickup truck enters a new era with the introduction of the 2024 Hilux Hybrid 48V. This marks the first time electrification has been integrated into this renowned vehicle, promising enhanced efficiency, improved driving performance, and a more comfortable ride in both urban and off-road environments.
The Hilux, celebrated for its Quality, Durability, and Reliability (QDR) since its 1968 debut, has earned its reputation as a versatile workhorse capable of conquering challenging terrains worldwide. The 2024 Hilux Hybrid 48V builds upon this legacy, reinforcing Toyota’s commitment to carbon neutrality through a multi-technology approach that offers practical and affordable options for a wide range of drivers, including commercial and off-road users.
Hilux Hybrid 48V: Design and Technology
Available exclusively in Double Cab format, the 2024 Hilux Hybrid 48V maintains the iconic Hilux design language. The bold three-dimensional grille and front bumper accentuate the truck’s robust and rugged presence. The spacious interior offers a comfortable environment equipped with modern features, including an updated infotainment system and the latest Toyota Safety Sense technology.
At the heart of the 2024 Hilux Hybrid 48V is a powerful 2.8-liter diesel engine augmented by a 48V hybrid system specifically engineered for the demands of a dual-use pickup truck. A compact motor generator, driven by the engine via a belt system, charges a 48V lithium-ion battery strategically placed under the rear seats to minimize impact on cabin space. This battery, weighing a mere 7.6 kg, also powers the vehicle’s 12V system through a DC/DC converter.
Mimicking Toyota’s full hybrid electric systems, the battery recharges during deceleration, capturing braking energy that would otherwise be lost. This regenerative braking also enhances braking performance. When charged, the battery provides up to 16 DIN hp (12 kW) of power and 65 Nm of torque to the engine, boosting acceleration, overall power output, and fuel efficiency.
Enhanced Performance and Efficiency
The hybrid system elevates the Hilux’s driving experience, delivering responsive acceleration, improved braking, greater fuel efficiency, and a smoother ride, both on and off-road. In urban settings, the added power enhances throttle response and provides linear acceleration, particularly from a standstill. The enhanced stop-start system extends engine-off time, contributing to a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 5% compared to the conventional diesel powertrain. This system also results in a quieter and more comfortable driving experience in traffic due to faster throttle response and a quieter engine restart.
The 2024 Hilux Hybrid 48V maintains its off-road prowess with the help of the motor generator, which ensures smoother acceleration on rough terrain. Regenerative braking enhances safety during downhill maneuvers. Furthermore, a reduced engine idling speed from 720 rpm to 600 rpm provides greater vehicle control in challenging conditions.
A new Multi-terrain Select system further enhances off-road performance by allowing drivers to adjust vehicle stability control settings based on specific driving conditions. Pre-set options include Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, and Rock, each calibrated to optimize traction and maneuverability. The Hilux Hybrid 48V also retains its impressive water-crossing capabilities, able to navigate depths of up to 700 mm thanks to waterproofing measures implemented for the hybrid system components.
Towing Capacity and Safety Features
The 2024 Hilux Hybrid 48V maintains its robust towing capacity of 3,500 kg and a payload capacity of 1,000 kg. The body-on-frame architecture and ladder-frame chassis contribute to exceptional durability and torsional rigidity. The tough leaf spring and twin shock absorber rear suspension system combine off-road capability with SUV-like ride comfort and handling. A class-leading minimum running ground clearance of 310 mm for Double Cabs, and approach and departure angles of 29 and 26 degrees respectively, further enhance its off-road credentials.
The 2024 Hilux Hybrid 48V is equipped with the latest Toyota Safety Sense technology, including an enhanced Pre-Collision System (PCS) with improved pedestrian and cyclist detection, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with roadside detection, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Road Sign Assist (RSA), and Adaptive High Beam (AHB).
The updated Toyota Smart Connect system features an 8-inch screen, cloud-based navigation, and an interactive voice agent. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are also included.
The Hilux Legacy Continues
The Toyota Hilux’s legacy of over 21 million units sold globally since 1968 speaks volumes about its enduring appeal and proven capabilities. With the introduction of the 2024 Hilux Hybrid 48V, Toyota continues to refine and enhance this iconic vehicle, ensuring it remains a formidable force in the pickup truck market. The new Hilux Hybrid 48V is expected to arrive in European markets in mid-2024.
