Toyota bZ4X: The All-Electric Toyota EV SUV Arrives to Redefine the Segment

Toyota is charging into the electric vehicle market with the 2023 bZ4X, a groundbreaking all-electric SUV that embodies the brand’s commitment to a carbon-neutral future. This Toyota Ev Suv isn’t just about zero emissions; it’s about delivering a stylish, technologically advanced, and genuinely capable vehicle that enhances the driving experience. Arriving at dealerships this spring, the bZ4X is poised to make a significant impact on the Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) landscape, blending Toyota’s renowned reliability with cutting-edge EV technology.

With an EPA-estimated range of up to 252 miles for the XLE front-wheel-drive model, the 2023 Toyota bZ4X starts at an MSRP of $42,000. Beyond the attractive price point, owners of this Toyota EV SUV will benefit from substantial fuel cost savings. The EPA estimates that the 2023 bZ4X XLE FWD can save drivers up to $5,000 in fuel costs over five years compared to the average new vehicle. This combination of range, affordability, and long-term savings makes the bZ4X a compelling option in the burgeoning electric SUV market.

Beyond Zero: Toyota’s Vision for Electric Mobility

The bZ4X marks the debut of Toyota’s global bZ series, representing “Beyond Zero.” This moniker signifies Toyota’s human-centric approach to EV development, aiming to create more than just transportation solutions. The bZ series focuses on providing innovative and comfortable spaces for customers, integrating seamlessly into their modern lifestyles. This Toyota EV SUV is designed to be a versatile partner for daily commutes and weekend adventures alike.

The bZ4X joins Toyota’s already impressive portfolio of electrified vehicles, which accounted for approximately a quarter of the company’s U.S. sales last year. Toyota’s comprehensive electrification strategy includes hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and now, battery electric vehicles. The company’s vision is a future where carbon neutrality is achieved through a diverse range of powertrain technologies.

Toyota is committed to expanding its electrified lineup to around 70 models globally by 2025, including 15 dedicated BEVs, with seven under the bZ brand. This ambitious plan is part of Toyota’s larger goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Globally, Toyota has already put over 20 million electrified vehicles on the road, contributing to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. Over the next decade, Toyota is investing over $70 billion in electrification, targeting 3.5 million global BEV sales by 2030. The bZ4X Toyota EV SUV is a crucial step in realizing this ambitious vision.

A Unique and Familiar SUV Design

Toyota engineers designed the bZ4X to be both futuristic and familiar, challenging conventional EV designs while retaining the practical appeal of a traditional SUV. The design theme, “hi-tech and emotional,” resulted in a Toyota EV SUV that is both striking in urban environments and capable enough for outdoor adventures.

Available in XLE and Limited grades, with both Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) and All-Wheel Drive (AWD) configurations, the bZ4X offers versatility and performance to suit various needs. Positioned in the heart of the compact SUV segment, the bZ4X provides ample space and comfort. It measures 184.6 inches long, 2.0 inches lower than the RAV4 at 69.0 inches tall, and slightly wider at 73.2 inches, with a wheelbase of 112.2 inches. Inside, the bZ4X provides a generous 42.1 inches of front legroom and 35.3 inches for rear passengers, along with 27.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row.

The bZ4X profile is characterized by a sleek and balanced silhouette with dynamic lines flowing from front to rear. The lowered axis and long wheelbase contribute to its dynamic stance and aerodynamic efficiency.

The front design emphasizes the corners, creating a futuristic and aerodynamic appearance. The curved front bumper and uniquely shaped headlamps contribute to the bZ4X’s distinctive face. The rear design projects a powerful presence with an “interlocked” trapezoidal shape integrating the rear lamps, back door, and bumper.

Beyond aesthetics, the bZ4X design is highly functional. The low hood enhances driver visibility, while the ducktail spoiler and lower diffusers improve aerodynamic performance. Exterior color options for the 2023 bZ4X include Heavy Metal, Black, Elemental Silver Metallic, Supersonic Red, and Wind Chill Pearl, with two-tone options featuring a black roof available for an added cost.

Interior Comfort and Tech-Forward Design

The bZ4X interior is designed around the driver and passengers, prioritizing comfort, space, and intuitive technology. The BEV-dedicated platform allows for a wide and spacious cabin, creating a relaxing environment for all occupants. Ample legroom and side-to-side space contribute to a comfortable, home-like atmosphere in this Toyota EV SUV.

Piano-black accents and satin materials in the Limited grade enhance the interior’s premium feel, while soft-touch materials on the dashboard add a touch of luxury. Interior color options include Black Softex®/Fabric-trimmed for the XLE grade and Black or Light Gray Softex®-trimmed options for the Limited grade.

The instrument panel and strategically placed MID screen maximize the feeling of spaciousness and ensure excellent meter visibility, keeping the driver focused on the road. Soundproofing glass and wind-noise reduction features create a quiet and refined cabin. An available fixed panoramic roof further enhances the sense of openness.

The center console acts as a central hub, offering smartphone storage with optional wireless charging and easily accessible USB ports (A and C). Ergonomically designed door handles add to the thoughtful interior design.

Intuitive Technology and Connectivity

The bZ4X is equipped with a suite of intuitive technologies, starting with the standard 12.3-inch widescreen Toyota Audio Multimedia system. Developed by Toyota’s Connected Technologies team, this system offers a wide range of connectivity and convenience features, including Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. Users can interact via touch and voice activation.

The system includes a three-year trial to Drive Connect, providing access to Intelligent Assistant, Cloud Navigation, and Destination Assist. Intelligent Assistant responds to voice commands like “Hey Toyota” for directions, POI searches, audio adjustments, and climate control. Cloud Navigation uses real-time cloud data for the most accurate maps and routing. Destination Assist offers 24/7 live agent support.

The Toyota Audio Multimedia system supports dual Bluetooth connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay®, and Android Auto™. An available Wi-Fi Connect subscription provides 4G connectivity for up to five devices, turning the bZ4X into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Integrated Streaming allows linking Apple Music® and Amazon Music subscriptions for in-vehicle control, complementing HD Radio, USB data, and SiriusXM® Platinum Plan.

For audiophiles, the bZ4X offers an available JBL® Premium Audio system with 9 speakers, an 8-channel 800-watt amplifier, and a 9-inch subwoofer for an immersive sound experience.

Standard Connected Services include Safety Connect (Emergency Assistance, Roadside Assistance, Collision Notification, Stolen Vehicle Locator) with a 1-year trial and Service Connect (Vehicle Health Reports, Maintenance Alerts) with a 3-year trial.

Electric Performance and AWD Capability

The bZ4X Toyota EV SUV delivers the performance expected from a capable SUV, combined with the smooth and responsive driving dynamics of an electric vehicle. Built on the e-TNGA dedicated platform, the bZ4X offers engaging driving dynamics, thanks to instant torque and a low center of gravity.

Available in FWD and AWD, the bZ4X produces 201 horsepower in FWD configuration and 214 horsepower in AWD. Acceleration from 0-60 mph is estimated at 7.1 seconds for FWD and 6.5 seconds for AWD, providing brisk and responsive performance.

The XLE FWD model achieves an EPA-estimated range of up to 252 miles, while the XLE AWD model offers up to 228 miles. Fuel economy is EPA-estimated at 119 MPGe combined for FWD and 104 MPGe combined for AWD.

The e-TNGA platform contributes to the bZ4X’s low center of gravity and high rigidity, with the battery pack positioned under the floor. The battery cross-framing structure enhances vehicle rigidity, while a lightweight body and dynamic suspension contribute to agile handling.

Intelligent throttle control and slip suppression enhance driving feel, while Regenerative Braking Boost Mode reduces brake pedal usage. Energy-saving features include a heat pump system, available seat and steering wheel heaters, and a Toyota-first front-seat radiant foot-and-leg heater, maximizing range in all climates.

X-MODE® AWD for Enhanced Traction

For AWD models, the bZ4X features a new X-MODE® system, a Toyota first, enhancing both on-road and off-road capability. Coupled with Multi-terrain Select, X-MODE® offers Snow/Dirt and Snow/Mud modes to handle various slippery and uneven surfaces.

Snow/Dirt Mode optimizes stability and traction on slippery dirt roads. Snow/Mud Mode applies brakes to spinning wheels for a limited-slip differential effect, enhancing traction on unpaved, bumpy, or heavily snow-covered roads. Downhill Assist Control helps maintain constant speed during steep descents.

Grip-Control, an added X-MODE® function, modulates motor drive power to enhance off-road performance during turns, maintaining a constant speed and preventing slippage on rough terrain.
