Toyota has expanded a safety recall to include approximately 43,000 more 2023 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, and Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles. This expansion brings the total number of recalled vehicles in the U.S. to around 153,000, addressing a potential issue with the driver’s airbag. The recall also includes other Toyota models like the Highlander, Highlander Hybrid, and Tacoma.
Driver’s Airbag Deployment Risk Prompts Recall Expansion
The recall stems from a faulty spiral cable assembly in the steering column, which may lose its electrical connection to the driver’s airbag circuit. If this connection is lost, the airbag warning light will illuminate, and critically, the driver’s airbag might not deploy in a crash. This malfunction violates federal motor vehicle safety standards and significantly increases the risk of injury to the driver during an accident.
Toyota Taking Action to Remedy Airbag Issue in Corolla and Other Models
Toyota dealerships will inspect the serial number of the spiral cable assembly in all recalled vehicles. If necessary, they will replace the faulty cable with a new one free of charge. Owners initially included in the recall were notified in September 2023. Owners of the newly added vehicles will be notified by early November 2023.
Previous Recall Information Reinforces Airbag Safety Concerns
A prior recall, announced in July 2023, covered approximately 110,000 vehicles in the U.S., including similar Toyota models and some Lexus vehicles. This initial recall also addressed the same spiral cable assembly issue and potential airbag deployment failure. The expanded recall underscores the importance of addressing this safety concern. Toyota is committed to ensuring the safety of its customers.
