All-Wheel Drive: Enhanced Confidence in Any Weather
A significant addition for the 2021 model year is the introduction of all-wheel drive to the Toyota Avalon lineup. Toyota projects that AWD models will account for approximately 20 percent of Avalon sales. Available as a standalone option on the XLE and Limited grades, the Dynamic Torque Control AWD system is paired with a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine and an eight-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission. This powertrain configuration delivers 205 horsepower and features dual exhausts.
The Dynamic Torque Control AWD system provides optimal traction in challenging weather conditions while minimizing the typical fuel economy drawbacks associated with AWD systems. It can direct up to 50 percent of engine torque to the rear wheels when accelerating from a standstill or when wheel slippage is detected at the front.
When AWD is not required, the electromagnetically controlled coupling on the rear drive axle can disengage the propeller shaft to prioritize fuel efficiency. The system is designed to seamlessly re-engage instantaneously when needed, operating transparently to both the driver and passengers.
The Avalon AWD achieves impressive fuel economy, with manufacturer projected EPA-estimated ratings of 25 city / 34 highway / 28 combined MPG. The suspension tuning, wheels, and tires from the front-wheel-drive Avalon models are carried over to the AWD versions. Importantly, the addition of AWD does not compromise the Avalon’s spacious passenger cabin, trunk capacity, ride comfort, cabin quietness, or agile handling.
The XLE AWD trim includes a leather-wrapped heated steering wheel, a feature already standard on the Limited grade. The Avalon AWD is a North America-exclusive model, developed in the U.S. and assembled at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky.
