The New Toyota Land Cruiser: An Icon Returns to North America

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (August 1, 2023) – The legend is back. After a three-year hiatus, Toyota’s longest-running nameplate and off-roading icon, the Land Cruiser, makes its triumphant return to the North American market for the 2024 model year. Staying true to its rugged heritage, this comeback marks a return to the Land Cruiser’s roots, offering exceptional off-road capability at a more accessible mid-$50,000 MSRP.

Since its initial introduction to the U.S. in 1958, the Land Cruiser has evolved significantly. From the iconic two-door 40 Series, known for its fold-down windshield, white roof, and rear jump seats, to the luxurious and capable 200 Series, the last generation sold in the States, the Land Cruiser has consistently blended robust strength with evolving features. The New Toyota Land Cruiser now circles back to its foundational principles, re-emerging as a high-quality off-roader designed to bring backcountry adventures within reach for a broader spectrum of enthusiasts worldwide.

Built upon the robust TNGA-F global truck platform, the 2024 Land Cruiser is engineered to conquer the most demanding environments. This generation exclusively features the potent i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, delivering 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Slightly more compact than its predecessor, the 200 Series, the new Toyota Land Cruiser promises enhanced agility on challenging trails, incorporating off-road technology first seen in Toyota’s latest truck lineup. Adding to its exclusivity, a First Edition grade, limited to just 5,000 units for North America in the initial two months of production, will offer unique two-tone paint options and enhanced off-road equipment.

“This icon truly belongs in our lineup,” stated Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager. “For 2024, the Land Cruiser’s return to its origin is embodied in a heritage-inspired design, combined with the legendary capability and durability synonymous with the Land Cruiser name. It’s poised to empower even more customers to embark on global adventures, continuing a legacy that spans generations.”

The 2024 Land Cruiser will be manufactured at Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara and Hino plants in Japan and is slated to arrive in U.S. dealerships in the spring of 2024. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) is anticipated to start in the mid-$50,000 range, with the official announcement coming closer to the on-sale date.

Returning to its Origin: A Legacy of Capability

For decades, the Land Cruiser has cemented its reputation as a globally recognized symbol of Toyota’s core values: quality, durability, and reliability. Its journey in the U.S. began in the late 1950s, with initial sales being modest. However, the arrival of the 40 Series marked a turning point, propelling the Land Cruiser to become Toyota’s best-selling model in the U.S. for five consecutive years. These early Land Cruisers were characterized by solid front and rear axles on leaf springs, a distinctive boxy silhouette, a flat roof, short overhangs, and the iconic “TOYOTA” grille.

As customer needs evolved, so did the Land Cruiser. It grew into larger station wagon models like the 55 and 60 Series, eventually culminating in the 200 Series – a premium, full-size luxury off-road SUV that represented the Land Cruiser’s evolution in the U.S. market until its hiatus.

Now, the new Toyota Land Cruiser embraces its heritage while incorporating modern engineering. Built on the global TNGA-F body-on-frame platform, the new chassis boasts increased rigidity compared to the 200 Series, thanks to the strategic use of high-strength steel, blanking, and laser welding techniques. In terms of dimensions, the 2024 Land Cruiser is 4.4 inches narrower and 1.2 inches shorter than the outgoing 200 Series, enhancing its off-road maneuverability and agility.

The design direction for the new Toyota Land Cruiser was a collaborative effort between Toyota’s North American-based studio CALTY Design Research and the global development team. The design philosophy was guided by four core principles: authentic, reliable, timeless, and professional. The result is a design that prioritizes function, embodying a pure and purposeful aesthetic.

Distinctive Land Cruiser styling cues are evident across the grades. The Land Cruiser 1958 grade proudly displays iconic round LED headlights and the heritage “TOYOTA” grille, while the Land Cruiser grade upgrades to slim, rectangular headlights reminiscent of the FJ62. A squared body profile echoes the classic Land Cruisers of the past, and the A-pillar is intentionally positioned further back to enhance outward visibility on trails, complementing the overall aesthetic. Furthermore, the front overhang is reduced to improve the approach angle, a crucial feature for off-road performance.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser features a newly developed double-wishbone front suspension with twin-tube shocks, paired with a multi-link rear suspension with coil springs. Electric power steering is implemented to enhance steering feel and facilitate the integration of advanced safety and convenience systems. All models are equipped with 17-inch disc brakes on both front and rear wheels. With a standard trailer hitch across all grades, the Land Cruiser offers a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds, further expanding its versatility.

i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Powertrain: Standard Across the Lineup

Powering every new Toyota Land Cruiser is the advanced i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. This system combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-hp electric motor seamlessly integrated into an eight-speed transmission. Energy is stored and delivered by a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, resulting in a total system output of 326 horsepower and an impressive 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel economy estimates will be released closer to the Land Cruiser’s official on-sale date.

All Land Cruiser models are equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive system, featuring a center locking differential and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range. The system also incorporates Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and an Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD). For enhanced traction in demanding off-road situations, an electronic locking rear differential is standard on all new Toyota Land Cruisers, capable of distributing power 50/50 to the rear wheels.

An Undisputed Off-Road Icon, Reimagined

The Land Cruiser’s legendary off-road prowess is further enhanced in this new generation. An all-new front stabilizer bar disconnect system comes standard on the Land Cruiser and First Edition grades, allowing for increased wheel articulation at the push of a button. The new Toyota Land Cruiser boasts an approach angle of up to 31.0 degrees, a maximum departure angle of 22.0 degrees, and a breakover angle of 25.0 degrees. Ground clearance reaches up to 8.7 inches, ensuring ample capability over varied terrain.

For added protection during off-road excursions, customers can opt for rock rails and full coverage high-strength steel skid plates. Standard front tow/recovery hooks provide essential recovery points. The Land Cruiser 1958 grade comes equipped with factory-installed fog lamps for enhanced visibility, while the Land Cruiser grade features upgraded color-selectable RIGID fog lamps.

Multi-Terrain Select, now operational in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low modes, is standard on the Land Cruiser grade. This system offers adjustable settings to optimize wheel spin control across diverse terrains such as Mud, Dirt, and Sand. CRAWL Control, also standard, functions as an off-road cruise control at low speeds, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering while the system manages one of five selectable speeds. Downhill Assist Control is another standard feature, aiding drivers in navigating steep descents by automatically limiting vehicle speed. The available Multi-Terrain Monitor, displaying crisply on the optional 12.3-inch touchscreen (standard on the Land Cruiser grade), provides drivers with a view of potential obstacles on the trail ahead.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser is designed to be a highly customizable platform, with a wide array of Toyota Genuine Accessories and Associated Accessory Products (AAP) available. This ecosystem currently includes over 100 accessories, ranging from off-road recovery gear and rack attachment brackets to outdoor sporting equipment carriers, offering owners extensive personalization options. These accessories can also be conveniently integrated into customer’s monthly payments, streamlining the accessorization process through Toyota.

A Connected Cruiser for the Modern Era

The new Toyota Land Cruiser comfortably seats up to five occupants. The Land Cruiser 1958 models feature black fabric seats and an 8.0-inch touchscreen equipped with Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This advanced multimedia system also unlocks a suite of enhanced connectivity and convenience features, including Over-the-Air (OTA) updates.

The Land Cruiser grade offers heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats, available in black or Java, along with a larger 12.3-inch multimedia monitor and an optional 14-speaker JBL premium sound system. This grade also offers available 4G connectivity for up to five devices, transforming the vehicle into an AT&T Hotspot. A premium package option for the Land Cruiser grade includes luxurious leather-trimmed seats. The limited First Edition grade comes exclusively with leather-trimmed seats and a distinctive “First Edition” logo embossed on the door panels.

A standard Qi wireless charging pad with enhanced power output and dual USB-C charging ports in the front row (rear ports optional) keep devices powered up. Practical features for off-road driving include a palm rest for touchscreen operation and side knee pads, enhancing comfort and usability in challenging conditions.

A Smart Key System with push-button start is standard across all grades. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, the available Digital Key allows compatible smartphones to act as a vehicle key for entry, tailgate access, and starting the vehicle (4G network dependent). This Digital Key can also be remotely shared, offering greater control over vehicle access.

Simple and Focused Grade Structure

The new Toyota Land Cruiser will be available in three distinct grades: the Land Cruiser 1958, the Land Cruiser, and the limited-run Land Cruiser First Edition. An optional premium package for the Land Cruiser grade adds power heated and ventilated leather-trimmed seats with lumbar support, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, head-up display, digital rearview mirror, moonroof, and more, offering a step up in luxury and features.

The 2024 Land Cruiser presents a palette of seven exterior color choices: Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Underground, Black, Meteor Shower, Trail Dust, and Heritage Blue. The two-tone Trail Dust and Heritage Blue exterior colors are paired with a sophisticated Grayscape roof, adding to the visual appeal.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0: Standard Safety and Convenience

Safety is paramount, and all 2024 Land Cruiser models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0), Toyota’s comprehensive suite of active safety and convenience systems. Enhanced system sensors with improved detection capabilities underpin TSS 3.0. This suite encompasses:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist

Proactive Driving Assist, when conditions are met, utilizes the vehicle’s camera and radar to provide gentle braking into curves or gentle braking and/or steering to aid in maintaining distance from preceding vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists. It is important to note that Proactive Driving Assist is not a replacement for the Pre-Collision System and operates in different scenarios.

The Toyota Safety Sense features have been significantly enhanced for TSS 3.0:

  • The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection now features enhanced detection capabilities due to new system sensors. It also includes improved intersection support with enhanced detection in certain situations and now detects motorcyclists, in addition to pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Lane Departure Alert now incorporates Steering Assist and improved lane recognition, including the detection of certain 3D objects like guardrails that help define lane boundaries.
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control now offers Full-Speed Range capability and adds a fourth following distance setting, expanding upon the previous three. Enhanced vehicle detection allows the system to detect multiple preceding vehicles and vehicles in adjacent lanes, resulting in smoother and more natural speed adjustments, especially during lane changes.
  • Lane Tracing Assist, a new addition to the Land Cruiser, requires Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to be enabled. It relies on detectable lane markings and features enhanced lane recognition compared to previous TSS generations. Beyond lane centering, this system also helps create more space between vehicles being passed in adjacent lanes by subtly adjusting the vehicle’s path within its lane.
  • Emergency Driving Stop System, a new function of Lane Tracing Assist, monitors driver inputs like steering to detect inattentiveness or unresponsiveness, such as during a medical emergency. If the driver fails to respond to alerts, the system is designed to bring the vehicle to a stop.
  • Road Sign Assist, also new to the Land Cruiser, detects speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs, and certain warning signs, displaying an icon of the detected sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).

In addition to TSS 3.0, standard safety features include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) to alert drivers to vehicles in adjacent lanes, Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) for added awareness when reversing, and Hill Start Assist Control (HAC).

Beyond Zero Vision and Comprehensive Warranty

Aligning with Toyota’s commitment to a carbon-neutral future, the new Toyota Land Cruiser joins Toyota’s growing lineup of hybrid vehicles bearing the Beyond Zero badge. Toyota currently offers 16 electrified vehicles, providing customers with more choices than any other automaker to reduce their carbon footprint.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser is backed by Toyota’s 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty, covering components other than normal wear and maintenance items. Powertrain components are covered for 60 months/60,000 miles, and corrosion perforation is covered for 60 months with no mileage limitation. Hybrid-related components are warranted for 8 years/100,000 miles, and the hybrid battery is covered for 10 years/150,000 miles, transferable across ownership.

The 2024 Land Cruiser also includes ToyotaCare, a plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, and 2 years of Roadside Assistance with unlimited mileage.
