North Dakota-based Corwin Automotive Group has broadened its reach in Colorado with the acquisition of Larry H. Miller Liberty Toyota in Colorado Springs. This marks the second Larry H. Miller dealership in the region to be sold this month, signaling significant shifts in the Colorado Springs automotive market.
The dealership, formerly known as Larry H. Miller Liberty Toyota located at 5115 New Car Drive, is now operating as Corwin Toyota of Colorado Springs. This change follows Corwin’s recent purchase of Larry H. Miller Toyota of Boulder, which has been rebranded as Corwin Toyota Boulder. Both dealerships were acquired from Asbury Automotive Group, a major dealership conglomerate based in Georgia. While the financial details of these transactions remain undisclosed, these acquisitions represent a substantial expansion for Corwin Automotive in the competitive Colorado automotive landscape.
Corwin Automotive Group has retained the existing staff at both Colorado dealerships, with the exception of the general manager positions. This includes 135 employees at the Colorado Springs location and 115 in Boulder, ensuring continuity and local expertise for customers. Curtis Hensley, a seasoned executive from Corwin’s Fargo, N.D., Ford dealership, has been appointed as the general manager of Corwin Toyota of Colorado Springs. His experience is expected to guide the dealership in this new chapter.
Drew Corwin, operations manager for Corwin Automotive, expressed enthusiasm about this expansion in a recent news release. “I’ve long been impressed with the Colorado Springs and Boulder areas, and I’m looking forward to bringing our customer-focused sales and services philosophy to the community,” he stated. Corwin highlighted the potential for growth, a positive work environment, excellent customer service, and community engagement as key objectives for the newly acquired dealerships.
Interestingly, the dealerships acquired by Corwin and another Toyota dealership in Colorado Springs’ Motor City were all part of a larger acquisition by Asbury Automotive Group in October, when they purchased the Larry H. Miller Group of Cos. for $3.2 billion. Prior to Corwin’s acquisition, another Larry H. Miller Toyota dealership in Colorado Springs, located at 15 Motor Way, was purchased by Omaha-based Baxter Auto Group on March 1 and rebranded as Toyota of Colorado Springs. This series of transactions underscores a dynamic period of change within the Toyota dealership landscape in Colorado Springs.
Corwin Automotive Group’s roots trace back to 1914, starting as a bicycle shop founded by Samuel Corwin in Fargo, North Dakota, which later began selling cars. The company has experienced significant growth through acquisitions in recent years, including Ford dealerships in Reno, Nevada (2020), Spokane, Washington (October), and Republic, Missouri (December). Currently, Corwin Automotive operates 16 dealerships across eight states: Colorado, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, and Washington. This latest acquisition of Larry Toyota Colorado Springs further solidifies Corwin Automotive’s expanding presence in the automotive retail sector and its commitment to the Colorado market.
