After owning two previous Tacomas in the past couple of years, I recently upgraded to the 2024 SR5 4×4 model, and I’m excited to share my initial impressions. This purchase was driven by a need for an automatic transmission for my wife after a work-related injury, but it turned into an opportunity to experience the latest generation of this iconic truck. I opted for the top SR5 package with Predator side steps, and so far, it’s been an incredibly positive experience.
A Smooth and Feature-Rich Ride
The first thing that struck me about the 2024 Tacoma SR5 is its incredibly smooth ride. Compared to my previous Sport model, this truck feels like driving on butter. Beyond the comfortable ride, the SR5 is packed with features that have significantly enhanced my driving experience.
The updated technology is a major highlight. The app features are a huge leap forward from my 2022 model, offering seamless integration with the truck. The digital key functionality, including the ability to start the engine remotely from my Apple Watch, is incredibly convenient. Starting the truck via the app doesn’t automatically shut off when the door opens; a simple button press confirms you’re ready to drive.
Impressive Details and Performance
Toyota clearly paid attention to detail in the 2024 Tacoma SR5. Abundant storage and strategically placed MOLLE panels offer excellent organization options. The phone charger actually charges my phone efficiently, even with its Otterbox case. USB-C ports are conveniently located throughout the cabin. The integrated, electrified locking tailgate adds security and convenience. Even the small touches like the credit card key are impressive.
The JBL sound system delivers a rich audio experience, and I’ve consistently achieved 26+ mpg on highway driving at 70 mph. The lane-keeping assist feature is a welcome addition, and thankfully, there’s no engine stop/start system. Even the rear windows are automatic, a nice touch often overlooked. A minor but appreciated detail: the new wheels lack those flimsy plastic bolt covers that tend to wiggle loose and fall off.
Early Verdict: Exceeding Expectations
With just 460 miles on the odometer, I’m still in the early stages of ownership, but the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Sr5 has already exceeded my expectations. From its smooth ride and abundance of features to its impressive fuel economy and thoughtful design elements, this truck delivers a well-rounded package.
I’m confident that the 2024 Tacoma SR5 will continue to impress as I put more miles on it. This is a truck built for adventure, comfort, and everyday practicality. It’s a vehicle that truly lives up to the Tacoma legacy.
