FRS Toyota: Cam and Crank Trigger Solutions for FA24 Engine Swaps

The FA24 engine swap into an Frs Toyota (or its twin, the Subaru BRZ) presents unique challenges, particularly with cam and crank trigger signals. Direct signal conversion isn’t recommended for these critical circuits. If you’re looking for alternatives to pre-made kits like the one offered by RS Motors, this article provides solutions for accurate cam and crank timing using a custom bracket and modified trigger wheels.

Custom VR Sensor Bracket for FRS Toyota with FA24 Engine

Instead of directly converting signals, a more reliable approach is to adapt a readily available VR (Variable Reluctance) sensor to work with the FA24’s reluctor wheel. This solution utilizes a custom-designed bracket to mount a Prius VR sensor (part number 90919-05087) to the FA24 engine.

The bracket design, available as an STL file, is intended for DMLS (Direct Metal Laser Sintering) aluminum printing for optimal durability. Alternatively, the design can be simplified for CNC machining, particularly the back surface which currently reflects unnecessary geometry from the original FA24 bracket. The top surface is intentionally designed taller to allow for precise adjustment of the sensor air gap. Filing it down to achieve a gap of 0.8-1.0mm is crucial for accurate readings. This setup has been tested and proven effective in a real-world application over several months. An adapter harness for this specific application is also available upon request.

Addressing Fuel Pressure Sensor Compatibility in FRS Toyota FA24 Swaps

The FA24’s high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) operates at a lower pressure than the previous generation engines found in 2013-2016 models. This difference poses a challenge when using the FA24 fuel pressure sensor with the older ECU. Currently, tuning platforms like Ecutek lack the functionality to adjust HPFP tables for the FA24. Therefore, simply repinning the FA24 sensor will not work correctly.

RS Motors offers a solution utilizing a differently scaled fuel pressure sensor that tricks the ECU into believing it’s receiving the expected fuel pressure values. However, the specific sensor used in their kit remains undisclosed. Further research and development are needed for alternative solutions in this area.

Modified Trigger Wheels for Accurate Cam Timing on FRS Toyota FA24

While directly copying the 2013-2016 cam trigger wheels is possible, adjustments are necessary to correct the cam timing for the FA24 engine.

Step files for these trigger wheels are available, providing a starting point for modifications. These files allow for precise adjustments to ensure accurate cam timing with the FA24 engine in your FRS Toyota. Remember to fine-tune these adjustments to ensure proper engine performance and synchronization.
