SAN ANTONIO, TX (Sept. 21, 2022) – Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas (Toyota Texas) has officially commenced production of the highly anticipated all-new Toyota Sequoia, an SUV that embodies electrification, power, and innovation. This third-generation Toyota Sequoia, born and built in Texas, signifies a major leap forward in Toyota’s hybrid vehicle strategy, featuring a state-of-the-art twin-turbo V6 hybrid i-FORCE Max powertrain. This advanced system delivers impressive horsepower and torque while significantly reducing fuel consumption and environmental impact.
“The launch of the third-generation Toyota Sequoia represents a pivotal moment for Toyota as we transition towards carbon neutrality. This all-hybrid model not only meets but exceeds customer expectations for this iconic SUV,” stated Kevin Voelkel, president of Toyota Texas. “Our team members are incredibly proud to integrate the Toyota Sequoia into our Texas production line, embracing new challenges and delivering vehicles that resonate with our customers’ lifestyles.”
Toyota Sequoia Finds its Exclusive Texas Manufacturing Home
Toyota’s commitment to Texas was further solidified in 2019 with a substantial $391 million investment in the San Antonio plant. This investment was specifically aimed at preparing the facility to become the sole producer of both the all-new Toyota Tundra and the Toyota Sequoia. The start of Toyota Sequoia production marks a new chapter in advanced automotive manufacturing at Toyota Texas. Over 3,800 Toyota employees and 5,300 on-site suppliers dedicated thousands of hours to prepare for this launch, implementing cutting-edge manufacturing technologies like innovative laser welding and a refined production process capable of handling the largest metal sheet in Toyota’s history.
The 2023 Toyota Sequoia is designed to live up to its legendary name, boasting a striking new design, enhanced luxurious comfort, and advanced technology. It perfectly balances robust performance with improved fuel efficiency. Coupled with Toyota’s renowned quality, durability, and reliability, this three-row SUV is poised to be a leader in the full-size SUV segment when it becomes available at dealerships next month. Notably, the Toyota Sequoia debuts with the Capstone grade, a premium trim level exclusive to vehicles manufactured at Toyota Texas, highlighting the plant’s advanced capabilities.
Deepening Roots in San Antonio
To celebrate the Toyota Sequoia’s new production home, Toyota Texas demonstrated its commitment to the local community by donating a total of $100,000 to the San Antonio River Foundation and the San Antonio Parks Foundation. These contributions will support vital initiatives focused on tree proliferation, preservation, and broader environmental stewardship within San Antonio’s south side.
Toyota’s total investment in San Antonio now exceeds $3.1 billion, underscoring the company’s long-term commitment to the region.
“We are thrilled that the new Toyota Sequoia is being manufactured right here in San Antonio at Toyota’s upgraded facility. This milestone reflects Toyota’s strong confidence in our city and our skilled workforce,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg.
Judge Wolff added, “Having been involved with Toyota’s initial decision to establish a plant in San Antonio back in 2002, I’ve witnessed firsthand their positive impact. For nearly two decades, Toyota has been an exemplary corporate citizen. Together with their supply partners, they have created over 7,000 jobs for Bexar County residents. We are excited to celebrate the local production of the all-new, all-hybrid Toyota Sequoia.”
