Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system has long been recognized as the gold standard for smooth hybrid performance, remarkable efficiency, and outstanding reliability. Its seamless operation is a key feature, providing a driving experience where the hybrid system works effectively without being intrusive. The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto combines the power of a 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine with a compact, high-torque electric motor through a uniquely engineered transaxle. This combination delivers a significant performance boost, achieving a combined 194 system horsepower. The versatile Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto accelerates from zero to 60 mph in just 8.1 seconds, nearly a full second faster than its gasoline-only counterparts, offering a noticeable improvement in responsiveness and driving dynamics.

The intelligent system dynamically adjusts power distribution between the gasoline engine and electric motor, or utilizes both simultaneously as required, ensuring a smooth and efficient driving experience. Regenerative braking further enhances efficiency by converting the electric motor into a generator during deceleration. This process captures the kinetic energy from the rotating wheels when braking and stores it in the nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) hybrid battery pack, maximizing energy recuperation and contributing to the vehicle’s impressive fuel economy.

Drivers of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto can actively manage fuel consumption by selecting from various operating modes. ECO mode, available in both Hybrid and gasoline models, optimizes throttle response and air conditioning operation to prioritize fuel efficiency. In EV mode, under specific conditions, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto can operate solely on electric power for up to 0.6 miles at lower speeds (below approximately 25 mph). A Hybrid System Indicator and fuel consumption display, integrated within a 4.2-inch TFT screen, provides real-time feedback to help drivers operate the vehicle in the most economical manner possible.

Refreshed Exterior Styling of the 2016 RAV4 Lineup

The 2016 RAV4 lineup introduced refreshed exterior styling, giving the vehicle a more streamlined and dynamic presence. The bolder front fascia is particularly striking when equipped with the available LED combo headlights, daytime running lights, and Hi-Lo headlights. Redesigned rocker panels sharpen the vehicle’s profile and seamlessly integrate with restyled front and rear bumpers, creating a more cohesive and flowing design. Available LED taillights further enhance the premium aesthetic of the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto and the entire RAV4 range.

In addition to TSS, RAV4 LE gasoline and XLE gasoline and hybrid models are equipped with a standard Blind Spot Mirror. The SE gasoline and Limited gasoline and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto grades further enhance safety with a standard Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, providing drivers with increased awareness of their surroundings.

The 2016 RAV4 also introduced new technologies focused on convenience, entertainment, and information. Smart Key, standard on SE and Limited (gasoline and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto) grades, and a Homelink® garage door opener (standard on Limited gasoline and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto grades), enhance convenience and security. Available front and rear parking sonar simplifies parking maneuvers, and the RAV4 offers the advanced Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan for ultimate parking assistance. This innovative Toyota-first technology utilizes four cameras positioned at the front, side mirrors, and rear of the vehicle to project a panoramic view of the vehicle’s surroundings onto the central seven-inch touch display. This system aids in parallel parking and maneuvering in and out of parking spaces. The Bird’s Eye View Monitor system also debuts Perimeter Scan, a Toyota-first feature that provides a live rotating 360-degree view around the vehicle, helping drivers identify potential obstacles in their vicinity.

For 2016, the RAV4 XLE and SE models feature the standard Scout® GPS Link cell phone-based navigation system (available on LE). For entertainment, RAV4 XLE, SE, and Limited models are equipped with SiriusXM All-Access Radio with a 3-month complimentary trial subscription, ensuring a wide range of audio entertainment options.

The Sporty RAV4 SE Grade

The refreshed 2016 Toyota RAV4 lineup welcomed a new athletic member, the SE grade, demonstrating that crossover versatility doesn’t necessitate sacrificing sporty driving dynamics. The RAV4 SE features a sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels, and paddle shifters for the six-speed automatic transmission. While delivering a more dynamic and responsive driving experience, the RAV4 SE also showcases a sporty aesthetic with LED headlights and taillights and a unique bumper and lower grille design. Its most distinctive exterior feature is the S-Code paint design, which combines one of three available upper colors (Super White, Black Sand Pearl, and Electric Storm Blue) over Classic Silver Metallic on the vehicle’s lower trim, creating a striking two-tone appearance.

Inside, the SE continues the sporty and upscale theme with SofTex®-trimmed seats featuring a power driver’s seat (also on Limited) and contrast stitching, along with a choice of two interior colors (Black and Black/Cinnamon), complemented by a Black headliner, Black A&B-pillar covers, sport floor mats and door sill protectors, and Gunmetal Gray trim accents. The SE instrument panel features twin dials with red illumination and red pointers, along with a standard 4.2-inch color TFT multi-information display, reinforcing its sporty character.

Performance and Driving Dynamics of the RAV4

The RAV4 delivers confident performance with its 2.5-liter direct-injection four-cylinder engine, producing 176 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 172 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,100 rpm. This engine is paired with a standard six-speed automatic transmission, achieving EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings of 24 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. Models equipped with Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive achieve EPA estimates of 22/29/25 mpg.

Similar to premium vehicles, the Toyota RAV4 offers driver-selectable operating modes. Eco mode optimizes powertrain operation for maximum fuel efficiency, while Sport mode sharpens shift timing, throttle response, and steering feel for a more engaging driving experience. Downshifting in Sport mode includes throttle “blip” functionality, mimicking the technique used by drivers of manual transmission vehicles for smoother transitions. RAV4 models with Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive also adjust torque distribution in Sport mode to enhance agility and handling.

The RAV4 gasoline model, in its standard front-drive configuration, includes a traction-enhancing feature called Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD). This system, operating as a secondary layer of computer logic within the Traction Control system, engages at speeds below 25 mph to simulate the function of a mechanical limited-slip differential without reducing engine power. All RAV4 gasoline models are equipped with standard Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), preventing rollback when starting on inclines. All RAV4 models (except SE) include standard Trailer Sway Control, which uses Vehicle Stability Control to counteract trailer sway during towing by selectively applying brakes to individual wheels.

For enhanced traction in diverse conditions, gasoline RAV4 models offer the sophisticated Dynamic Torque Control AWD system, also available on the larger Highlander. This system utilizes various sensors to continuously monitor and actively manage torque distribution to the rear wheels through an electromagnetically controlled coupling in the rear differential. Torque distribution can vary from 100:0 to 50:50, with front-wheel drive automatically engaged during normal driving to maximize fuel efficiency. Dynamic Torque Control automatically engages AWD during acceleration or when wheel slippage is detected. New for 2016, torque transfer to the rear wheels initiates from the moment the steering wheel is turned, reducing load on the front tires in all Drive Modes (previously only in Sport Mode on 2015 AWD RAV4s). If wheel slip occurs, the system can transfer up to 50 percent of torque to the rear wheels to improve lateral grip. An AWD Lock button allows drivers to fix torque distribution at 50:50 at speeds up to approximately 25 mph for maximum grip in off-pavement or slippery conditions. Above this speed, the system automatically reverts to Auto mode.

Robust Construction and Comfortable Ride

The RAV4’s body structure extensively utilizes high-strength steel, creating a robust, stiff, and lightweight platform that underpins the vehicle’s smooth ride, agile handling, and quiet cabin. The rear suspension member features increased spot welds and support mounts to enhance rigidity and minimize vibration transfer to the cabin. The MacPherson strut front suspension and double-wishbone rear suspension effectively absorb bumps and road imperfections, ensuring a composed ride. A strut tower bar connecting the front strut towers to the main bulkhead further increases torsional rigidity. Front and rear shock absorbers and coils have been retuned across all RAV4 grades to improve stability and comfort. The SE grade features uniquely tuned sport shock absorbers and coils for enhanced sporty driving characteristics.

Vehicle-speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion electric power steering provides precise feel and responsive handling, eliminating the need for hydraulic fluid maintenance. The RAV4 LE comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels and P225/65R17 all-season tires. The XLE Hybrid upgrades to unique 17-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels with 225/65R17 tires, while the XLE gasoline model rides on 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels with 235/55R18 tires. The Limited and SE grades are equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels and P235/55R18 all-season tires.

Spacious and Refined Interior

The RAV4 combines maneuverability and ease of parking with a surprisingly spacious interior. Despite its compact exterior dimensions, it offers ample space for five adults, including a generous 37.2 inches of rear legroom and 38.4 cu. ft. of cargo capacity behind the rear seats (35.6 cu. ft. for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto). Folding the 60/40 split rear seats expands cargo space to 73.4 cu. ft. (70.6 cu. ft. for the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto). Rear seatbacks recline for enhanced passenger comfort, and rear privacy glass is standard on all RAV4 models.

The RAV4 Limited trim elevates interior refinement with luxury SofTex-trimmed seats, dash, and door panels. The driver enjoys an eight-way power-adjustable seat with memory and lumbar support, and front seats are two-stage heated. Additional conveniences include the Smart Key system with push-button start, remote power liftgate, a frameless auto-dimming rearview mirror with Homelink®, and a SofTex-covered sliding center armrest with console storage.

Significant attention was given to enhancing cabin quietness through the addition of sound insulation materials in the rear cargo area, floor pan, and side and rear doors. These measures effectively reduce road noise, creating a more premium and comfortable in-cabin experience in the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid auto and across the RAV4 lineup.
