SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (August 1, 2023) – The legend returns. After years of anticipation, Toyota is bringing back the Land Cruiser to North America for the 2024 model year. This revival sees the iconic nameplate reconnecting with its roots as a durable and dependable off-roader. Since its US debut in 1958, the Land Cruiser has evolved from utilitarian two-door models like the celebrated 40 Series – known for its fold-down windshield, white roof, and rear jump seats – to the luxurious and capable 200 Series, the last generation sold in the States, which combined Land Cruiser’s legendary strength with premium features. Now, the 2024 Land Cruiser is poised to recapture the essence of its heritage, offering a high-quality off-road experience at a more accessible price, inviting a broader spectrum of adventurers to explore the world’s most challenging terrains.

Built upon the robust TNGA-F global truck platform, the new Toyota Land Cruiser is engineered to conquer the most demanding environments. This generation exclusively features the powerful i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, producing 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, ensuring ample power for both on and off-road excursions. Slightly more compact than the previous 200 Series, the 2024 Land Cruiser promises enhanced agility on trails and incorporates cutting-edge off-road technology first introduced in Toyota’s latest truck lineup. The initial production run will include a limited First Edition grade, capped at 5,000 units for the first two months, featuring exclusive two-tone paint options and enhanced off-road equipment.

“This icon deserves its place in our lineup,” stated Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager. “For 2024, the Land Cruiser returns to its foundational principles with a design inspired by its rich past, coupled with the legendary capability and durability that define the Land Cruiser legacy. It’s ready to empower even more customers to embark on global adventures, continuing a tradition that spans generations.”

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser will be manufactured at Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara and Hino plants in Japan and is slated to arrive in U.S. dealerships in the spring of 2024. Manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing is expected to begin in the mid-$50,000 range, with final pricing details to be announced closer to the on-sale date.

Reconnecting with Heritage

For decades, the Land Cruiser has been synonymous with world-class capability, embodying Toyota’s core values of quality, durability, and reliability. Initially, in its 1950s U.S. entry, Toyota sold only a single Land Cruiser in its first year. However, the arrival of the 40 Series marked a turning point, establishing the Land Cruiser as Toyota’s best-selling model in the U.S. for five consecutive years. These early models were characterized by solid front and rear axles on leaf springs, and their distinctive boxy silhouette, flat roof, short overhangs, and prominent “TOYOTA” grille became instantly recognizable. As customer needs evolved, the Land Cruiser expanded into larger station wagon variants like the 55 and 60 Series, ultimately culminating in the 200 Series, a premium, full-size luxury off-road SUV that preceded its hiatus from the U.S. market.

Now, marking its return to the U.S. after a three-year absence, the 2024 Land Cruiser is built upon the global TNGA-F body-on-frame platform. This new ladder frame construction provides enhanced chassis rigidity compared to the 200 Series, thanks to the utilization of high-strength steel and advanced welding techniques. In comparison to its predecessor, the new Land Cruiser is 4.4 inches narrower and 1.2 inches shorter, dimensions that contribute to improved off-road maneuverability and trail navigation.

The design vision for the all-new Land Cruiser was shaped through a collaborative effort between Toyota’s North American-based studio CALTY Design Research and the global development team. The design process was guided by four core principles: authentic, reliable, timeless, and professional. The resulting 2024 Land Cruiser design is a pure expression of form following function, reflecting its rugged and purposeful nature.

For the quintessential Land Cruiser aesthetic, the 1958 grade features iconic round LED headlights and a “TOYOTA” heritage grille, paying homage to its classic predecessors. In contrast, the Land Cruiser grades are distinguished by slim, rectangular headlights reminiscent of the FJ62, offering a modern yet retro touch. The squared body profile echoes the Land Cruisers of previous generations, while the A-pillar is strategically positioned further back, enhancing both the vehicle’s visual appeal and forward visibility on challenging terrains. Furthermore, the front overhang is reduced to improve the approach angle, crucial for serious off-roading.

A newly engineered double-wishbone front suspension with twin-tube shocks is paired with a multi-link rear suspension featuring coil springs, optimizing both on-road comfort and off-road articulation. To enhance steering feel and accommodate advanced safety and convenience technologies, the 2024 Land Cruiser incorporates electric power steering. All models are equipped with 17-inch disc brakes on both front and rear wheels, ensuring confident stopping power. With a standard trailer hitch across all grades, the Land Cruiser boasts a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds, adding to its versatility.

Standard i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Powertrain

The heart of the 2024 Land Cruiser is its standard i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, featured across all grades. This system combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-hp electric motor seamlessly integrated into an eight-speed transmission. Power is drawn from a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, resulting in a combined system output of 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque. Fuel economy estimates will be released closer to the Land Cruiser’s market launch date.

Every 2024 Land Cruiser is equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive system, incorporating a center locking differential and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range. The system also includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and an Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD). For enhanced traction in demanding off-road situations, an electronic locking rear differential is standard on all Land Cruiser models, capable of distributing power 50/50 to the rear wheels.

An Enduring Off-Road Icon

The Land Cruiser’s legacy as an off-road icon continues with this new generation. An innovative front stabilizer bar disconnect system is standard on the Land Cruiser and First Edition grades, providing increased wheel articulation at the touch of a button. Overall, the 2024 Land Cruiser boasts an approach angle of up to 31.0 degrees, a maximum departure angle of 22.0 degrees, and a breakover angle of 25.0 degrees. Ground clearance reaches up to 8.7 inches, ensuring it can confidently navigate challenging obstacles. For added off-road protection, customers can opt for rock rails and full coverage high-strength steel skid plates. Front tow/recovery hooks are standard across the range for off-road recovery situations. The Land Cruiser 1958 grade comes standard with fog lamps, enhancing visibility in adverse conditions. The Land Cruiser grade further upgrades to color-selectable RIGID fog lamps, offering enhanced customization and performance.

Multi-Terrain Select, now operational in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low modes, is standard on the Land Cruiser grade. This system provides adjustable settings to optimize wheel spin control across various terrains, including Mud, Dirt, and Sand. CRAWL Control, also standard, functions as a low-speed, off-road cruise control, allowing the driver to focus on steering while the system maintains one of five selectable speeds. Downhill Assist Control is another standard off-road feature, aiding drivers in navigating steep descents by automatically limiting vehicle speed. Drivers can monitor potential trail obstacles using the Multi-Terrain Monitor, displayed clearly on the available 12.3-inch touchscreen, standard on the Land Cruiser grade.

With Toyota Genuine Accessories and Associated Accessory Products (AAP), the 2024 Land Cruiser becomes a versatile platform for personalization. The AAP ecosystem is continuously expanding and currently includes over 100 accessories, ranging from off-road recovery gear to rack attachment brackets for storage and outdoor sporting equipment carriers. These accessories can be conveniently financed along with the vehicle, making customization through Toyota more accessible than ever.

Connected and Comfortable Cruiser

Offering seating for up to five, the Land Cruiser 1958 models feature black fabric seats and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system, supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This system provides access to a suite of enhanced connectivity and convenience features, including Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. The Land Cruiser grade upgrades to heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats, available in black or Java, and includes a larger 12.3-inch multimedia monitor and an optional 14-speaker JBL premium sound system. The Land Cruiser grade also offers available 4G connectivity for up to five devices, transforming the vehicle into an AT&T Hotspot. A premium package option for the Land Cruiser Grade includes luxurious leather-trimmed seats. The limited First Edition grade exclusively features leather-trimmed seats with a unique “First Edition” logo embossed on the door panels, adding to its exclusivity. A standard Qi wireless charging pad with enhanced power output and dual USB-C charging ports in the front row, with rear passenger ports available, cater to modern device charging needs. Functional interior enhancements for off-road driving include a palm rest for the center touchscreen and side knee pads, enhancing driver comfort and control in rough terrain.

A Smart Key System with push-button start is standard across all grades. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, an available Digital Key integrates with compatible smartphones, enabling vehicle entry, tailgate access, and vehicle starting (network dependent). The Digital Key can also be remotely shared, offering greater control over vehicle access compared to traditional physical keys.

Simplified Grade Structure

The 2024 Land Cruiser will be offered in three distinct grades: the Land Cruiser 1958, the Land Cruiser, and the limited-run Land Cruiser First Edition. An available premium package for the Land Cruiser grade adds features like power heated and ventilated leather-trimmed seats with lumbar support, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, head-up display, digital rearview mirror, moonroof, and more, offering a step up in luxury and technology.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser will be available in a palette of seven exterior color choices: Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Underground, Black, Meteor Shower, Trail Dust, and Heritage Blue. The two-tone Trail Dust and Heritage Blue exterior options feature a contrasting Grayscape roof, adding a distinctive visual element.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 Standard Across the Lineup

Every 2024 Land Cruiser model comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0), Toyota’s comprehensive suite of active safety and convenience systems. Enhanced system sensors with improved detection capabilities power TSS 3.0, which includes:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist

Proactive Driving Assist, when conditions are met, utilizes the vehicle’s camera and radar to provide gentle braking into curves or gentle braking and/or steering to support driving tasks like maintaining distance from preceding vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists. It is important to note that Proactive Driving Assist is not a substitute for the Pre-Collision System and operates under different parameters.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 represents significant enhancements over previous iterations:

  • The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection now features enhanced detection capabilities due to new system sensors. It offers improved intersection support with better detection in specific scenarios and now includes motorcyclist detection, in addition to pedestrian and bicyclist detection.
  • Lane Departure Alert now incorporates Steering Assist and enhanced lane recognition, including the ability to detect certain 3D objects like guardrails that may define lane boundaries.
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control now features Full-Speed Range capability and adds a fourth following distance setting, expanding upon the previous three. Enhanced vehicle detection allows the system to detect multiple preceding vehicles, as well as vehicles in adjacent lanes, resulting in smoother and more natural speed adjustments, particularly during lane changes.
  • Lane Tracing Assist, a new addition to the Land Cruiser, requires Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to be enabled. It relies on detectable lane markings and features enhanced lane recognition compared to earlier TSS generations. Beyond lane centering, this system also assists in creating more space between vehicles being passed in adjacent lanes by subtly adjusting the vehicle’s path within its lane.
  • Emergency Driving Stop System, a novel function within Lane Tracing Assist, monitors driver input, such as steering operation, to assess driver attentiveness or responsiveness, particularly in situations like medical emergencies. If the driver becomes unresponsive to alerts, this system is designed to safely bring the vehicle to a stop.
  • Road Sign Assist, also new to the Land Cruiser, detects speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs, and certain warning signs, displaying an icon of the detected sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).

In addition to TSS 3.0, standard safety features include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), designed to detect and alert drivers to vehicles approaching or positioned in adjacent lanes, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), which enhances safety when reversing by detecting vehicles approaching from either side and providing visual and audible warnings. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) is also included as standard.

Beyond Zero Vision

Reflecting Toyota’s commitment to a carbon-neutral future through a diverse approach, the Land Cruiser joins Toyota’s expanding lineup of hybrid vehicles bearing the Beyond Zero badge. Toyota currently offers 16 electrified vehicles, encompassing twelve hybrid models, two plug-in hybrid models, the bZ4X battery electric vehicle, and the zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell Mirai, providing customers with an unmatched range of choices to reduce their environmental footprint.

Comprehensive Warranty Coverage

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is backed by Toyota’s 36-month/36,000 mile basic new-vehicle warranty, covering all components except normal wear and maintenance items. Additional warranties include a 60-month/60,000 mile powertrain warranty and a 60-month warranty against perforation from corrosion, with no mileage limitation. Hybrid-related components are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles, and the hybrid battery is warranted for 10 years/150,000 miles, whichever comes first, and is transferable across ownership.

The 2024 Land Cruiser also includes ToyotaCare, a plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, and 2 years, unlimited mileage of Roadside Assistance.
