2024 Toyota Land Cruiser: The Icon Returns to North America with Hybrid Power and Heritage Design

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (August 1, 2023) – The legend is back. After a three-year hiatus, the Toyota Land Cruiser, Toyota’s longest-running nameplate and a global symbol of off-road prowess, is making its triumphant return to the North American market for the 2024 model year. Staying true to its roots, the reimagined Land Cruiser emerges as a robust and capable off-roader, now more accessible to a wider audience with a starting MSRP in the mid-$50,000 range.

From its humble beginnings in the U.S. in 1958, the Land Cruiser has journeyed through various iterations, from the iconic two-door 40 Series, renowned for its fold-down windshield and adventurous spirit, to the luxurious 200 Series, which blended Land Cruiser’s legendary durability with premium features. The 200 Series marked the last chapter for the Land Cruiser in the States. Now, the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser marks a return to its core values, offering exceptional off-road capability and Toyota’s renowned quality, durability, and reliability at a price point that invites more enthusiasts to explore the backcountry.

Built upon the robust TNGA-F global truck platform, the same foundation as the latest Toyota Tundra and Sequoia, the new Land Cruiser is engineered to conquer the most challenging terrains. For this generation, Toyota has opted for a potent and efficient powertrain, equipping every 2024 Land Cruiser with the i-FORCE MAX turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain. This system delivers an impressive 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, ensuring ample power for both on and off-road adventures. Compared to the outgoing 200 Series, the 2024 Land Cruiser boasts a slightly smaller and narrower profile, enhancing its agility on trails. It also incorporates cutting-edge off-road technologies first introduced in Toyota’s latest truck lineup. Adding to its exclusivity, a First Edition grade, limited to just 5,000 units for North America in the initial production run, will feature unique heritage-inspired design elements and enhanced off-road equipment.

“This icon absolutely belongs in our lineup,” stated Dave Christ, Toyota group vice president and general manager. “For 2024, the Land Cruiser returns to its origin, boasting a heritage-inspired design coupled with the legendary capability and unwavering durability that the Land Cruiser nameplate is celebrated for. It’s poised to empower even more customers to embark on adventures across the globe, continuing the legacy it has built over generations.”

The 2024 Land Cruiser is slated for production at Toyota Motor Corporation’s Tahara and Hino plants in Japan and is expected to arrive in U.S. dealerships in the spring of 2024. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price will start in the mid-$50,000 range, with final pricing details to be announced closer to the official on-sale date.

A Nod to Heritage: Back to the Origin

For decades, the Land Cruiser has stood as a global benchmark for off-road capability, embodying Toyota’s core principles of quality, durability, and unwavering reliability. When the Land Cruiser first entered the U.S. market in the late 1950s, initial sales were modest, with only a single unit sold in its debut year. However, the arrival of the 40 Series marked a turning point, propelling the Land Cruiser to become Toyota’s best-selling model in the U.S. for five consecutive years. These early Land Cruisers were characterized by their robust solid front and rear axles with leaf springs, and their distinctive boxy silhouette, featuring a flat roof, short overhangs, and the iconic “TOYOTA” grille, quickly became recognizable around the world. As customer needs evolved, the Land Cruiser grew in size and sophistication, transitioning into larger station wagon models like the 55 and 60 Series. This evolution ultimately led to the 200 Series, a premium, full-size luxury off-road SUV, which represented the Land Cruiser’s position before its hiatus from the U.S. market.

Now, with its reentry into the U.S. market after a three-year absence, the 2024 Land Cruiser embraces the global TNGA-F body-on-frame platform. This modern ladder frame construction provides enhanced chassis rigidity compared to the 200 Series, thanks to the strategic use of high-strength steel and advanced welding techniques. In pursuit of enhanced off-road agility, the new Land Cruiser is intentionally designed to be more compact than its predecessor, measuring 4.4 inches narrower and 1.2 inches shorter than the outgoing 200 Series.

The design direction for the 2024 Land Cruiser was a collaborative effort between Toyota’s North American-based CALTY Design Research studio and the global development team. The design philosophy was guided by four core principles: authenticity, reliability, timelessness, and professional functionality. The resulting all-new Land Cruiser design is a pure expression of form following function, reflecting its robust and capable nature.

Visually, the 2024 Land Cruiser pays homage to its heritage while embracing modern design cues. The Land Cruiser 1958 grade features the iconic round LED headlights and the heritage “TOYOTA” grille, instantly recognizable hallmarks of classic Land Cruisers. Moving up the trim levels, the Land Cruiser grade adopts slim, rectangular headlights, reminiscent of the FJ62, offering a different, yet equally iconic, aesthetic. The squared body profile further reinforces the connection to Land Cruisers of previous generations, while the A-pillar has been pushed back, not only enhancing the overall look but also improving outward visibility, particularly beneficial when navigating challenging trails. The front overhang is also reduced, contributing to a greater approach angle, crucial for off-road maneuverability.

The 2024 Land Cruiser’s suspension is engineered for both on and off-road performance. It features a newly developed double-wishbone front suspension with twin-tube shocks paired with a multi-link rear suspension with coil springs. To enhance steering feel and enable the integration of advanced safety and convenience technologies, the Land Cruiser is equipped with electric power steering. All models are fitted with 17-inch disc brakes on both front and rear wheels, providing confident stopping power. With a standard trailer hitch across all grades, the 2024 Land Cruiser boasts a towing capacity of up to 6,000 pounds, adding to its versatility.

i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Powertrain: Standard Across the Range

Setting a new standard for efficiency and power, the 2024 Land Cruiser comes exclusively with Toyota’s advanced i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain across all grades. This sophisticated system combines a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor seamlessly integrated into an eight-speed transmission. Power is drawn from a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, resulting in a total system output of 326 horsepower and a robust 465 lb.-ft. of torque. While official fuel economy estimates will be released closer to the on-sale date, the hybrid powertrain promises a compelling balance of performance and efficiency.

The 2024 Land Cruiser is engineered for true four-wheel drive capability. Every model is equipped with a full-time four-wheel drive system featuring a center locking differential and an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high/low range. The system also incorporates Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and an Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD) to optimize traction in various driving conditions. For enhanced off-road control, an electronic locking rear differential is standard on all Land Cruiser models, allowing for a 50/50 power split to the rear wheels when maximum traction is required on challenging terrain.

An Off-Road Icon Reborn

The Land Cruiser’s legacy as an off-road icon continues with this new generation, building upon decades of proven capability. A notable addition for enhanced off-road performance is the all-new front stabilizer bar disconnect, standard on the Land Cruiser and First Edition grades. At the touch of a button, this system increases suspension articulation, allowing for greater wheel travel and improved traction over uneven terrain. Overall, the 2024 Land Cruiser boasts an approach angle of up to 31.0 degrees, a maximum departure angle of 22.0 degrees, and a breakover angle of 25.0 degrees. Ground clearance reaches up to 8.7 inches, further solidifying its off-road credentials. For added protection in demanding environments, customers can opt for available rock rails and full coverage high-strength steel skid plates. Front tow/recovery hooks are standard across all grades, providing essential recovery points for off-road excursions. The Land Cruiser 1958 grade comes standard with fog lamps to enhance visibility in adverse conditions, while the Land Cruiser grade upgrades to color-selectable RIGID fog lamps, offering customizable lighting options.

Further enhancing its off-road prowess, the 2024 Land Cruiser features Multi-Terrain Select, now functional in both 4WD-High and 4WD-Low modes. Standard on the Land Cruiser grade, this system offers adjustable settings to optimize wheel slip control across various terrains, including Mud, Dirt, and Sand. CRAWL Control, also standard, functions as a low-speed, off-road cruise control, allowing the driver to focus on steering while the system automatically maintains one of five selectable speeds. Downhill Assist Control is another standard off-road feature, aiding drivers in navigating steep descents by automatically limiting vehicle speed. To further enhance situational awareness on the trails, the Multi-Terrain Monitor is available, displaying a clear view of potential obstacles on the available 12.3-inch touchscreen, standard on the Land Cruiser grade.

For those seeking to personalize their Land Cruiser for specific adventures, Toyota Genuine Accessories and Associated Accessory Products (AAP) offer a wide range of customization options. The AAP ecosystem is continuously expanding and currently includes over 100 accessories, from off-road recovery gear and rack attachment brackets to outdoor sporting equipment carriers and more. These accessories can be conveniently integrated into the vehicle financing, making it easier than ever for customers to personalize their Land Cruiser through Toyota.

Connected and Comfortable Cruiser

The 2024 Land Cruiser provides a comfortable and connected cabin experience for up to five passengers. Land Cruiser 1958 models feature durable black fabric seats and an 8.0-inch touchscreen equipped with Toyota’s latest Audio Multimedia system, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. This advanced multimedia system provides access to a suite of enhanced connectivity and convenience features, including Over-the-Air (OTA) updates, ensuring the system stays current with the latest software and features. Stepping up to the Land Cruiser grade brings heated and ventilated SofTex-trimmed seats, available in black or Java, along with a larger 12.3-inch multimedia monitor and an optional 14-speaker JBL premium sound system for an immersive audio experience. The Land Cruiser grade also offers available 4G connectivity for up to five devices, transforming the vehicle into an AT&T Hotspot, keeping occupants connected on the go. A premium package further elevates the interior with leather-trimmed seats on the Land Cruiser Grade. The limited First Edition grade comes exclusively with leather-trimmed seats and distinctive “First Edition” logos embossed on the door panels, adding a touch of exclusivity. A standard Qi wireless charging pad with enhanced power output and dual USB-C charging ports in the front row, with rear passenger ports available, ensures devices stay charged. Thoughtful functional features for off-road driving include a palm rest for stable touchscreen operation and side knee pads for added support during bumpy rides.

A Smart Key System with push-button start is standard across all 2024 Land Cruiser grades. With an active Remote Connect trial or subscription, an available Digital Key allows compatible smartphones to act as a vehicle key, enabling vehicle entry, tailgate access, and engine start (dependent on 4G network availability). The Digital Key can also be remotely shared with other users, providing convenient control over vehicle access without the need to physically hand over a key.

Simplified Grade Structure

The 2024 Land Cruiser lineup features a simplified and focused grade structure, offering three distinct models: the Land Cruiser 1958, the Land Cruiser, and the limited-run Land Cruiser First Edition. For those seeking even more premium features, an available premium package adds power-adjustable heated and ventilated leather-trimmed seats with lumbar support, a high-fidelity 14-speaker JBL audio system, a Head-Up Display, a digital rearview mirror, a moonroof, and additional 고급 conveniences.

The 2024 Land Cruiser is available in a palette of seven exterior color choices, allowing customers to personalize their vehicle. The color options include Ice Cap, Wind Chill Pearl, Underground, Black, Meteor Shower, Trail Dust, and Heritage Blue. The two-tone Trail Dust and Heritage Blue exterior colors feature a contrasting Grayscape roof, adding a distinctive visual touch.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0: Standard Safety Suite

Ensuring peace of mind on every journey, all 2024 Land Cruiser models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0), Toyota’s comprehensive suite of active safety and convenience systems. TSS 3.0 represents advancements in safety technology, with enhanced system sensors providing improved detection capabilities. This suite encompasses a range of features, including:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist

Proactive Driving Assist, when conditions are met, utilizes the vehicle’s camera and radar to provide gentle braking into curves or gentle braking and/or steering to support driving tasks such as maintaining distance from preceding vehicles, pedestrians, or cyclists. It’s important to note that Proactive Driving Assist is not a substitute for the Pre-Collision System and operates in different scenarios.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 brings enhancements to several key features:

  • The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection now boasts enhanced detection capabilities thanks to upgraded system sensors. It also features improved intersection support with enhanced detection in certain situations and now includes the ability to detect motorcyclists, in addition to pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Lane Departure Alert now incorporates Steering Assist and enhanced lane recognition, including the detection of certain 3D objects, such as guardrails, that may help define lane boundaries.
  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control now offers Full-Speed Range capability and adds a fourth following distance setting, expanding upon the previous three. Enhanced vehicle detection enables the system to detect multiple preceding vehicles, as well as vehicles in adjacent lanes, resulting in smoother and more natural speed adjustments, particularly during lane changes.
  • Lane Tracing Assist, a new addition to the Land Cruiser, requires Dynamic Radar Cruise Control to be enabled to function. The system relies on detectable lane markings and features enhanced lane recognition compared to previous TSS generations. In addition to lane centering, it also helps create more space between the Land Cruiser and vehicles being passed in adjacent lanes by subtly adjusting the vehicle’s path within its lane.
  • Emergency Driving Stop System is a new function integrated into Lane Tracing Assist. It is designed to monitor driver inputs, such as steering operation, to detect inattentiveness or unresponsiveness, potentially due to a medical emergency. If the driver fails to respond to alerts to regain control, this feature is designed to bring the vehicle to a controlled stop.
  • Road Sign Assist, also new to the Land Cruiser, is designed to detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs, and certain warning signs, displaying an icon of the detected sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).

In addition to TSS 3.0, standard safety features include Blind Spot Monitor (BSM), designed to help detect and alert drivers to vehicles approaching or positioned in adjacent lanes, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), enhancing safety when backing up by helping to detect vehicles approaching from either side and providing visual and audible warnings. Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) is also standard, providing added assistance when starting on inclines.

Beyond Zero Vision: A Step Towards Carbon Neutrality

Reflecting Toyota’s commitment to a carbon-neutral future through a diverse approach, the 2024 Land Cruiser hybrid proudly wears the Beyond Zero badge, signifying its place within Toyota’s growing lineup of electrified vehicles. Toyota currently offers 16 electrified vehicles, encompassing twelve hybrid models, two plug-in hybrid models, the bZ4X battery electric vehicle, and the zero-emission hydrogen fuel cell Mirai, providing customers with more choices than any other automaker to reduce their carbon footprint.

Comprehensive Warranty and ToyotaCare

The 2024 Land Cruiser is backed by Toyota’s comprehensive 36-month/36,000-mile basic new-vehicle warranty, covering all components except normal wear and maintenance items. Additional warranties include a 60-month/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a 60-month warranty against perforation from corrosion, regardless of mileage. Hybrid-related components requiring repairs due to defects in materials or workmanship are covered for 8 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first from the original date of first use when sold as new. The hybrid battery is covered for 10 years/150,000 miles, whichever comes first, and this coverage is transferable across ownership.

Every 2024 Land Cruiser also comes standard with ToyotaCare, a no-cost maintenance plan covering normal factory-scheduled maintenance for two years or 25,000 miles, whichever comes first, as well as 2 years of Roadside Assistance with unlimited mileage.
