2020 Toyota Tacoma: New Features, Tech, and Off-Road Prowess

The Toyota Tacoma has reigned as America’s best-selling mid-size pickup for an impressive 13 consecutive years, and for 2020, Toyota isn’t resting on its laurels. The 2020 Tacoma arrives with a suite of upgrades spanning technology, style, comfort, and convenience, reinforcing its position as a leader in the competitive mid-size truck segment.

Inspired by Toyota’s desert racing heritage, the third-generation Tacoma embodies the “work hard, play hard” spirit. Boasting 32 distinct configurations across six model grades—from the work-oriented SR to the luxurious Limited and the off-road-ready TRD Pro—the 2020 Tacoma caters to a diverse range of needs and lifestyles. Crucially, all 2020 Tacoma models come standard with Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P), a comprehensive safety suite encompassing Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert, and Automatic High Beams.

Fresh Design and Enhanced Functionality for the 2020 Tacoma

The 2020 Tacoma receives a visual refresh with new front grille designs unique to each trim level, and updated taillamp styling across the entire range. Inside, every 2020 Tacoma features a larger, more user-friendly multimedia touchscreen. The SR grade now sports a 7-inch touchscreen, while all other grades benefit from a larger 8-inch display. This upgraded system integrates Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa compatibility, bringing modern smartphone integration to the Tacoma experience.

Beyond the multimedia enhancements, the base SR trim gains practical upgrades such as intermittent windshield wipers and an optional LED bed lamp for improved nighttime cargo area visibility. The returning SX package for the SR Access Cab adds sporty blacked-out styling cues, including a black grille, headlight surrounds, overfenders, 16-inch alloy wheels, mirror caps, and door handles, enhancing its visual appeal.

For SR5 models equipped with the V6 engine, a significant comfort upgrade arrives in the form of a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with 2-way power lumbar support. The SR5 also receives updated dark gray wheel paint for a subtle styling tweak.

The Limited grade elevates the Tacoma to new levels of refinement for 2020. In addition to its distinctive new grille, the Limited model boasts new 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlamps with daytime running lights (DRL), LED fog lamps, and chrome taillamp inserts. The Premium Audio system, now standard on Limited, features the 8-inch touchscreen, and Smart Key functionality is expanded to include the passenger front door. A notable addition for the Double Cab Limited is the Panoramic View Monitor (PVM), providing a near 360-degree view around the truck, simplifying maneuvering in tight spots and enhancing safety.

TRD Models: Upping the Ante in Performance and Technology

Toyota Racing Development (TRD) models of the 2020 Tacoma receive substantial enhancements, further solidifying their performance and off-road credentials. The TRD Sport gains a new front grille design, new 17-inch wheels, LED fog lamps, and available LED headlamps with DRL. Chrome taillamp inserts, passenger Smart Key, and available Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) on Double Cab models further enhance the TRD Sport’s appeal. Like other higher trims, the TRD Sport also benefits from the 8-inch touchscreen multimedia system and the 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat when equipped with the V6 engine.

The 2020 TRD Off-Road model mirrors many of the TRD Sport’s upgrades, including a new grille, LED fog lamps, available LED headlamps/DRL, chrome taillamp inserts, and passenger Smart Key. Double Cab TRD Off-Road models gain the Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM), enhancing visibility of the surrounding terrain during off-road adventures. The TRD Off-Road also receives the upgraded 8-inch touchscreen and power-adjustable driver’s seat.

At the pinnacle of the TRD lineup, the Tacoma TRD Pro combines updated aesthetics with functional improvements. A unique new front grille design, sequential LED/DRL headlamps, new 16-inch wheels, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, and black-insert taillamps distinguish the TRD Pro with a more aggressive and distinctive appearance. The exclusive Army Green exterior color debuts for all 2020 TRD Pro models, joining Magnetic Gray, Midnight Black Metallic, and Super White in the color palette.

The new 16-inch cast-aluminum wheels on the TRD Pro are a testament to Toyota’s engineering focus. Each wheel is significantly lighter than the previous design, contributing to a crucial weight reduction for improved off-road performance. TRD engineers also refined the shock and spring tuning to complement the lighter wheels, resulting in enhanced off-road ride quality and handling.

The 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro enhances off-road visibility with the new Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) and Multi-Terrain Monitor (MTM) systems. Drivers can select front, side, or rear camera views for a comprehensive 360-degree perspective. For challenging terrain, a 5-second front undercarriage projected-path video playback feature aids in obstacle avoidance.

Inside the TRD Pro, comfort is elevated with a new 10-way power-adjustable seat and the Premium Audio system featuring an 8-inch touchscreen (and JBL Premium Audio on automatic transmission models). Smart Key functionality is extended to the front passenger door, and a power moonroof remains standard.

Built for Adventure and Off-Road Dominance

Tacoma 4×4 models utilize 4WDemand part-time four-wheel drive with an electronically controlled transfer case and either an Automatic Limited Slip Differential (Auto LSD) or an electronically controlled locking rear differential. Auto LSD provides limited-slip functionality using brake actuation at low speeds. TRD Off-Road and Pro models feature a selectable, electronically controlled locking rear differential for maximum traction in demanding off-road environments.

TRD Sport models feature sport-tuned shocks, while TRD Off-Road models are equipped with an off-road tuned suspension incorporating Bilstein shocks. The TRD Off-Road further enhances driver control with Multi-Terrain Select (automatic transmission only), allowing drivers to optimize performance for various terrains like loose rock, or mud and sand. This system adjusts wheel spin by modulating throttle and brake pressure for optimal traction across diverse surfaces.

The TRD Off-Road model is equipped for challenging trails with features like Locking Rear Differential, Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), clutch Start Cancel (manual transmission only), Active Traction Control, and Crawl Control. Crawl Control provides five selectable low-speed settings, enabling drivers to focus on navigating difficult terrain.

The available Tow Package (standard on all V6 models) enhances the Tacoma’s utility with a Class IV Towing Receiver Hitch, engine oil cooler, transmission fluid cooler (automatic transmission only), power steering cooler, 130-amp alternator, 4- and 7-pin connector with converter, and Trailer-Sway Control (TSC).

The TRD Pro distinguishes itself with features like the TRD-designed Desert Air Intake, designed to raise the engine’s air intake for cleaner air in dusty conditions, ensuring optimal engine performance. The TRD Pro’s heritage-inspired front grille with bold “TOYOTA” lettering, color-keyed accents, blacked-out hood scoop, and unique badging further set it apart.

Based on the Tacoma TRD Off-Road 4×4 Double Cab short-bed model, the TRD Pro is built to conquer challenging terrain. In addition to TRD Off-Road equipment, the TRD Pro includes FOX 2.5-inch internal bypass shocks tuned by TRD, TRD-tuned front springs with a 1-inch front lift, TRD-tuned rear suspension, a TRD Pro aluminum front skid plate, LED headlights with sequential turn signals and TRD Pro inserts, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, projector-beam headlights, taillights with black bezels, lighter 16-inch TRD black alloy wheels, Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Kevlar-reinforced tires, a TRD Pro hood scoop, special TRD Pro badging, and a TRD-tuned cat-back exhaust.

Durable Foundation and Performance

The Tacoma’s robust foundation relies on high-strength steel in the frame and hot-stamped, ultra-high strength steel in the body, ensuring durability and rigidity. All models feature a double wishbone coil-spring front suspension and leaf-spring rear suspension with staggered outboard-mounted gas shocks, providing a balance of on-road comfort and off-road capability.

Two engine options power the 2020 Tacoma. The standard 2.7-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine produces 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The available 3.5-liter V6 engine, utilizing Toyota’s VVT-iW technology and Atkinson-cycle combustion, delivers 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. Toyota’s D-4S fuel injection system combines direct and port injection for optimized performance and efficiency.

Both engines can be paired with a six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission (ECT-i), while the V6 is also available with a 6-speed manual transmission. When equipped with the V6 Tow Package, the Tacoma offers a towing capacity of up to 6,800 lbs (SAE J2807 standard), depending on the model grade.

Comfort and Refinement Inside

The 2020 Tacoma prioritizes cabin comfort with enhanced door seals, a multi-layer acoustic windshield, sound-absorbing headliner, and a floor silencer pad, contributing to a quiet and refined ride. The interior features soft-wrapped trim and metallic accents, creating a high-quality ambience.

SR and SR5 models feature fabric-trimmed seats, while TRD Sport and Off-Road grades offer unique embossed fabric upholstery. The TRD Pro boasts leather-trimmed heated front seats with TRD Pro logos, and the Limited grade features premium leather-trimmed seats.

Available premium features such as Qi wireless charging, Smart Key with push-button start, leather-trimmed seats, power tilt/slide moonroof, and dual-zone automatic climate control enhance the Tacoma’s everyday usability and comfort.

Versatile Configurations and Bed Utility

The 2020 Tacoma is offered in 32 configurations, encompassing Access Cab and Double Cab models, 4×2 and 4×4 drivetrains, and a wide range of grades. Access Cab models provide under-seat rear storage, while Double Cab models feature 60/40 split rear seats with under-seat storage.

Access Cab models have a 127.4-inch wheelbase and a 73.7-inch bed. Double Cab models are available with a 127.4-inch wheelbase and a 60.5-inch bed or a 140.6-inch wheelbase with the 73.7-inch bed. All models utilize a composite SMC bed that is lighter and more durable than steel.

The tailgate features an easy-lowering function, and an available factory-installed tri-fold hard tonneau cover provides secure cargo storage. The bed deck includes two-tier loading and an integrated deck-rail utility system with adjustable tie-down cleats. A range of Genuine Toyota Accessories, such as cargo dividers and mini tie-downs, further enhance bed utility. An available 120V/400W power point in the bed adds to its versatility.

Advanced Multimedia and Safety Systems

The 2020 Tacoma’s multimedia system receives a comprehensive upgrade across all grades. Every Tacoma now features Android Auto™, Apple CarPlay®, and Amazon Alexa compatibility, along with a larger touchscreen. A six-speaker sound system, Bluetooth® connectivity, USB ports, and an integrated backup camera display are standard. SiriusXM capability with a 3-month All Access Trial is also included.

SR models feature a 7-inch touchscreen, while SR5 and higher grades get an 8-inch touchscreen. Premium Audio with dynamic navigation is available on TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road and standard on Limited and TRD Pro, featuring six JBL® speakers and a subwoofer amplifier.
