2009 Toyota Corolla Engine Stuttering and Power Loss: Troubleshooting Guide

I’m experiencing a frustrating issue with my 2009 Toyota Corolla and hoping to get some expert advice. My Corolla, with approximately 110,000 miles, has started exhibiting engine problems that are causing significant concern. As a second owner and not particularly knowledgeable about car mechanics, I’m struggling to diagnose the root cause and find a reliable solution.

The problems began a few months ago when the check engine light started illuminating intermittently. This was often accompanied by a noticeable engine stutter or hesitation, especially at highway speeds. For instance, while driving around 60 mph, the car would momentarily lose power and slow down slightly. While I could regain speed, these incidents were sporadic and unsettling.

Over time, the issue has escalated. Now, the check engine light comes on more frequently, and the power loss is much more severe. It’s not just a momentary stutter anymore. Instead, the car will dramatically lose acceleration, sometimes dropping to as low as 25 mph, regardless of how much I press the gas pedal. This happens unpredictably, whether it’s a short drive or a longer commute, and on both city streets and highways.

Initially, I took my 2009 Toyota Corolla to a local repair shop. They scanned for error codes but claimed they couldn’t identify the problem or replicate the symptoms. Seeking a more specialized opinion, I brought it to a Toyota dealership. They replaced the spark plugs and ignition coils, hoping this would resolve the issue. While I don’t recall the exact error code from that visit, this service was performed in December. Unfortunately, replacing the spark plugs and coils did not fix the underlying problem.

Recently, the same symptoms have returned. During my highway commute, the car will suddenly stop accelerating. Cruising at 60 mph, the car begins to decelerate, and I can only maintain a speed of around 40 mph. If traffic slows further, the car struggles to accelerate back to even 40 mph, sometimes barely reaching 20 mph. Pushing the gas pedal harder yields little to no response. Occasionally, the RPMs will spike, providing a brief surge of power, but this is fleeting, and the car quickly reverts to its sluggish state. These episodes can last anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes and occur every time I drive the vehicle.

To get a new error code reading, I visited AutoZone earlier this week. The diagnostic scan returned a code indicating an “Ignition Coil A Primary/Secondary Circuit” fault. Consulting with my father, who has some automotive knowledge, he suggested trying a fuel injector cleaner. I used a fuel injector cleaner, but unfortunately, the problem persists.

At this point, I’ve invested around $400 into diagnosing and attempting to repair this issue on my 2009 Toyota Corolla, and the problem is still unresolved. I am desperate to find a definitive fix without further financial setbacks. Any guidance or suggestions on how to properly diagnose and repair this issue would be greatly appreciated. I’m really hoping to avoid the expense of replacing the entire car!
